Upgrade Problem

I recently purchased a GP2x with 1.0 firmware, so I thought "why not get the benefit of uprgraded softwares?"

How wrong could I be!

Not only did the upgrade f@@k up my XviD files (which played perfectly on 1.0) it also caused a problem with switching it on and getting a screen full of rainbow lines, which is due to the faulty power switch on the side of the thing (press all the way down, f@@ked up, 3/4 way down, power up!) which can crash the system with a slight knock or sideways glance.

I managed to re-flash the firmware back to 1.0 (thanks John Willis), and then the firmware 1.4 arrived on the scene.

I started the upgrade, but the unit crashed during the upgrade (see rainbow lines problem) and will not re-flash to 1.0 nor will boot into 1.4 (I just get the loading screen).

Anyone out there have a similar problem? I would like to get it replaced (under warranty) but where in the UK can I get it done? I have no receipt because I purchased it from ebay!

as mentioned in the Gamepark Holdings Warranty - Its not covered reguardless now that you used an unofficial firmware upgrade and it didnt go through right, looks like you have a brick.

if you search for unbricking a GP2x in the forums here you will find several links to this page that explains some methods of resurecting, i cant remember it off hand but you might want to check there

Have you been under a rock for the last 24 hours? 1.4 is OFFICAL.

When you boot your gp2x up now what shows on the screen? You might not have damaged your uboot and you should be able to fix it with the unbricking guild http://www.distant-earth.com/gp2x/2005/11/...cked-gp2xs.html

But I think you have already tried that looking at one of the posts on that page.

It can't be dead batteries, I use a power adapter.

1.4 official huh, thats why its not up for download with proper instructions on GPH's site and only availabe through IRC huh? interesting I could swear that usually means either a beta release or leaked ver. oopp look what i found right here, i think it reads as follows "we take no responsibility for any damage caused when performong a firmware update and you do so at your own risk", yup sounds like warranty really covers that eh"?

btw I first suspected the batteries as well but I figured if he is doing Firmware updates he would most likely have invested enough time to check that.

also heres that site i was talking about:
http://www.distant-earth.com/gp2x/2005/11/...cked-gp2xs.html

hopefully it works for you man I do wish you the best of luck on that i know id be pist of if the damn thing bricked itself, but i definatley wouldnt spend another $180 on the thing Ill shell out the Extra 50 for a PSP at least we know the battery lite works on that device.

I've already tried the unbricking guide, thats not really what I need help with, I need the help to recover after the firmware crashes during an update.

I really do hope that it is not bricked, as I did use to own a PSP but at least they seem like a finished product, instead of having a knackered power switch and crash most of the time. (And from what other problems I've read, a lot more!).

Thanks for all of your help anyway!

if the power switch was faulty i would have asked for a refund from the seller before i tried anything as risky as upgrading the firmware...

but if you can unbrick it using the links already posted you could contact the seller and ask where they bought it from, you maybe able to send it back to them for a replacment, being as though there is a hardware fault.

I have contacted GBAX.com and they asked me to return it with the receipt, but as I bought it from ebay I don't have one!

Tried to boot it up this morning, and nothing, not even moving the power switch 3/4 of the way will start it up anymore.

The switch was not faulty when I first received it (before I posted positive feedback), it only seemed to happen after the first upgrade.

I wouldn't mind paying for it to be repaired, if I could find someone who does it here in the UK, I just don't want to spend another £120+ again, as my credit card is dented enough with the purchase of my xbox 360 (yeah, I spent £280 on a console and all thats worth playing on it is four player Gauntlet online!).

Ask if GBAX with repair it for a fee which would be your best bet.

Done that, they suggested that I join this forum!

Hi,

After contacting the seller of the item, I decided to return to this problem (as I feel I'm getting nowhere fast), and saw that a post said that some people got their rainbow gp2x to switch on by using a different voltage on their adapter (4.5v as opposed to 3v) and I'm happy to say that it worked, and I managed to reflash the software to V1.0, but the unit always hangs at the green loading screen now, anyone have any ideas?

And why would the change of voltage make it switch on?

Why does it require more juice now?

i am having the same problem with the hanging of the loading screen
Double check the filesystem of your SD card it must be FAT32 and nothing else. This is the problem I was having, I was telling it to format as FAT32 but when I checked the properties it was still just FAT

is it a stabilized power adaptor with at least 1A of output?
Sounds like it isn't....
