Replacement Interface

IMO, the best of menus must have a fluid feel to them. I can even say that its more important than functionality. If you take the PSP's menu for example, something very simple can be greatly enhanced by simple animations because it adds fluidness. And it is how fluid a menu feels that I would judge its worth from. Just my two cents!

That kind of list interface is perfect for things like songs. Try fitting the full text of a song into an icon's space and have more than 10 icons viewable ;)

I guess for songs, yes. Is that the main use for the GP2X, or is the main use for most of us games and emus? Plus doesn't the mp3 player itself list the songs within the program? I really don't know as I don't use the GP2X for music. If so then you really don't need to see alot of song icons in the launcher anyway as they are in the player.

Of course as someone suggested you could set a list view or icon view. That is a good idea

It could be configured by catagory so if you are in music it goes to list view and if you are in games it goes to icon view, or however the user sets it.

I also like your idea of a hot button that calls up an image if you insist that there has to be one somewhere. That way it doesn't take up space unless you want it. If you don't use it you won't even know it is there. I think that is best if that type of thing is implemented.

Perhaps we could have different types of interfaces working in that menu. You have the top bar to select the type of application you are looking for, select games and bring up the DaveC style grid with icons for the applications you want. Go to music and get a list like we see here already.

You know, this is all well and good, but I wonder why Craigix started this thread .... what does he know, and is not telling us?

I would nix that image window , or have an option to shut it off though, it takes up space that could be used for icons. I still don't see the usefulness in an image in addition to the icon image/text telling me the file that I am loading. I mean I am not THAT retarded that I forget what the program that I am loading for the 50th time is, who made it, what it does, and need a picture and description of it to remind me ;)

That gph is planning to redo the interface. I read it somewhere in gph's plans for 1.5.0

This is the interface that I (and I mean "I") would like to have, just cuz I like to have small fonts.

Don't critique it, I know that not everyone would be able to read the fonts. Just showing off what I'd like :p

oh my god, i would pay for a menu like that, that kicks so much arse i dont know what else to say. i love the pixel and small font, its just awesome.

or should i say, menu, with that skin, since thats the same style menu already suggested, just skinned differently.

i liked paragons first but then i seen this...wow, i hope this design is what is used...and i hope you make this full skin for it tebb lol

if GPH dont adopt this style, anyone wanna make it for me ill pay you :)

Why do you like the list menu better? Don't you think it is more awkward to use than icons?

not sure, my windows folder view has been set to "details" since god knows when, i hate big chunky take up loads of space icons, and like someone said earlier, its not really going to work with icons when you have 30+ files in the folder, it'll take ages scrolling through 30 icons a page to find the file/whatever you want, a list is much more efficient, if it was sorted alphabetically, if you hold down left or right it would skip a page like it does in DrMDX, and gets faster if you hold down the stick up/down?

this:
gp2xmenu2.png

is essentially the same as this:
interfacetebb9vw.gif

(damn, take a look at it through the gp2x's picture viewer..it looks sooo sweet..)

only with a different layout, what if the layout was able to be modified via settings menu? and the type of icon view? you could set to icons or list view...makes everyone happy that way.

im not too sure on the bit at the side with a "blurb" about the file and an image..but maybe it could work someway.

So you think only 10 list items per page is better than 20 icons? I think it much quicker to have 20 per page than scroll through a list even with a speedup button. Don't forget your windows folder is different. You have a mouse so you can quickly go right to the item you want. It is not like you have to scroll through each item with a joystick.

You could see much more at once with icons than a 10 item list. Next time you play around with the GP2X try this: Play around on the first screen of the launcher selecting icons with the matrix. Then go into a folder with alot of files. Notice how much more tedious it is scrolling the list and how it sucks that you can hardly see many files? Plus lists are bOOOORRRRing. This launcher would be like that, unless it had an icon mode. I think it could have both views if possible.

Like this: Since you like the style. It is a bit too dark for my liking but since it would be skinnable no biggy. As I said before the blurb would go.

i prefer the list way, not everyone can like the same thing unfortunately, which is why an option to change it would be a good idea.

Actually I came up with the design, paragon re-did the graphics ;)

i wasn't actually talking about the design for the layout, i just thought that parag0n said he was going to try to code it (can't remember now though or find the post). so i was saying if i he was able to provide a choice between your layout and hanz's then he might make a lot of people happy...

I am German -so I really like nice and orderd lists :D
Besides - As Dave has shown, it would work just as well with the icons. the sideblurb could really nicely move in/move out (maybe with the right shoulder button)giving the menue a fluid feel. The blurb could also be used with an implemented image viewer to show previews of pictures and movies. I think this would be more doable than having a list of thumbnails.

Personnaly, i dislike the actual launcher. I just need a simple explorer!!
When i launch GPE it run the program
When i launch VIDEO it run video player
When i launch MUSIC it run music player
etc ...
A little INI file to link extension with the tool (*.AVI open MPLAYER etc ..)

Of course a little tools bar will be nice (copy/past/delete/rename/properties/batterie/detail or icon ...)

I dont like the idea to separate emu with other homebrew, all are GPE. It's better to stay people organize themself their SDCard

JYCET

edit:
like m8ex post 153 :D

First of all, thanks to everyone who liked my interface, much apreciated :D

Second, I agree with DaveC about matrix system being faster and showing more icons, but you forget that you can't show the entire file name under the icon, and in my opinion you will finish finding something faster if you actually can see what you're looking for.

I could put it so 10 items could be shown, and the programmer could make it so you would press L and R to jump 5 items up or down in the list...

this interface for the win! :D (in my opinion)
i find it stupid on the actual interface, that you always have to choose between the sd card of the nand memory, but i never use that nand...

i dont know whether anyone has mentioned this yet, but could you not have different viewing options? list for songs (like Tebb's), and grid icons (like DaveC's) for files and programs, in the same menu, would truly rock. i don't see why as ideas they're mutually exclusive..

It'd be a bitch to code both.
Well we should get things going asap. From what I see, the menue favorites are not to different, so we should be able to advance with the new launcher. Has the sourcecode for the image-viewer already been released? The tasks for programming could also be split, if needed.
