I know it has been discussed many times before, but in this case, is it possible someone could make a way to use an iPod as a hdd for the gp2x?

It can be used as a hard drive, is self powered and usb compatible, surely all that is needed now is some clever fellow to write drivers for the gp2x to connect to the iPod? :D :p

well it's a good idea i think, although damned if i know what i'd use it for. also i don't have an ipod but i do have a similar device (didn't pay the fashion tax :D). anyhoo i'm sure it will happen some day. but not for a good while...i think it depends on the success of open2x...once that's fully in place i think a lot of possibilities will open up. but that'd make engadget for sure :)

You should be able to do it with a custom cable and the USB drivers on gp2x.de

Oh, and some scripting probably, since the GP2X GUI won't let you access anything but NAND and SD as far as I know.

i use my 60gig JOBO datatank (self-powered) with my GP2X, so i see no reason why an iPod couldn't be used ..

You could save mp3s on it and play them through your gp2x

ROFL!!!

Well i thought that through a few times since I myself own an M:Robe 100 player (5gigs) by Olympus which is also selfpowered and features a usb client...

One thing you could do when attaching a USB HDD is save a whole load of psx isos for example... would spare much time when testing which games run on gp2psx now, wouldn't it :D ?

Also you would be able to save a huge bunch of video files at once... erm... well... whatever reason you would want to do that for...

Only thing is that I am afraid to brick my m:robe by adressing it the wrong way... they tend to do that for some reason. apparently they are not as rugged and robust as the iPods are...

@JOBO: You are already using a 60gig HDD with your gp2x? And that hasn't been mentioned on the board before? That is pretty cool actually... could you post something like a tutorial on how to make use of the HDD with emulators and such?

well .. first of all i built my breakout box to exploit the connectivity of the EXT port .. full video/audio/USB/serial/JTAG/etc.

then, i hacked together some modules: usb-storage, sd_mod, etc.

then, i plugged in my JOBO Datatank, loaded up the modules, and mounted the datatank off /mnt/sd/datatank .. this way, it just looks like the datatank is on the SD .. so it makes no difference to games/movieplayer, etc.

but i can't really say its easy. you need the EXT->USB adapter. art103's done a lot of work to make this available for people to use easily enough .. i've only done it to support my programming efforts ..

That was my main intention ;)

@torpor: mounting it in the sd folder is pretty smart actually... no scripts needed then. I have searched the forum a little bit and found the PCB in the wiki... I would be interested in how much you actually payed for the parts?

I've ordered one of these now:

Link

He supplies drivers to use external HDDs as a storage medium on the GP2X, it mounts them on the GP2X and you access it through the NAND on the GP2X menu.

I'll get back to you when it arrives and see if it works with my iPod :D

Hm...
people were talking about doing this with the PSP, but the issues were:
1. The iPod can't be used as a USB host
2. Even if it could, you could only use it to transfer stuff back and forth between the memory stick you had in it

People ended up getting a sony mp3 player working for it though. Anyways, good luck getting it to work, that'd be awesome if it did.

The GP2X has USB Host. It's absolutely possible to get an iPod connected.

Shows what the PSP has behind it, eh?

so is this likely to work?

An iPod is recognised as a generic mass storage device by a PC, so yes. If torpor had one, he could probably plug it into his breakout box and have it working as easily as his databank.

In fact, somebody's already selling USB hubs.

just to confirm: i've hooked up every USB disk i own to the GP2X .. the Datatank, my terrabytes' worth of USB2 external drives, external USB cardreaders (all card formats work), and my iPod Mini ..

once you get USB working, its no problems to use external data storage. end of problem.

well .. you're not 'wrong', its just that the answer is 'unless you make/get your own USB convertor hardware for the gp2x, forget about it, you can't use USB storage out-of-the-box' ..

i'm lucky that i know a few hardware guys, as i am just a lowly programmer hacking around to get another machine to target my code on .. and for that its nice to have disk space! ;)

I know have the USB converter but cant get my iPod to work.

@ Torpor: what did you do to get your iPod to work?
