Loading Skins In Cramfs?

Cramfs makes the NAND memory of the gp2x read-only, for a very good reason: the less you write to it, the longer it lasts.

This does mean that you can't install skins into it. Before you moan about this, consider the benefit that cramfs provides. Reallyfastboottime versus pppprrrrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeettttttttttttttttttttttttttttttyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.

Personally, while I admit that the default skin needs ... well, work, the fact is that it does work. It's clean and uncomplicated. It gets me where I need to go. Most novelty skins end up annoying me after a day or so.

There are ways to install cramfs and have read-write NAND, but I'll let you search the forum as I have no interest in the subject and have never bothered.

We're working on a replacement menu system that will allow you to have the skins stored in zip files on the sd card, you can browse the skins and changes will be instantly applied.

All configuration etc will be on the SD card for now. We might look into setting aside a small part of the nand for storing settings if there is demand.

Any ideas ?

Sounds great!
Are you completely changing the way the menu works, or only the graphics of it? It would be neat to have a more customizable menu, much like the alternative ones that have popped up.

Yeah it will be another alternative, and will replace the GPH menu in the Open2x project, so it must at least match GPH's functionality. Marduk is working on it as he gets time, and I'll have the kernel level stuff finished soon and should get a chance to help out.

We're looking at making as much as possible configurable through ini files, eg. a mame.ini that corresponds to mame.gpe, allowing you to set the clock speed.

Might also look at adding a built-in rom browser to make things a bit more consistent.

A rom browser that automagically starts the emulator would be very nice!!

Yes, this way it lasts about 20 years instead of only 10.

Personally I would love to turn the unit on, select games, and have shortcuts to all emulators in one place (instead of having tem bunched up with folders and so on)

...ok, someone tell me it's already been done...

hmm, I think wanx can do this.

Yeah most alternate menus just scan the card for gpe files, and we will do the same. Since the scan can take a couple of seconds, we'll look at caching the results on the card and doing a rescan in the background.

Yes, but it also boots in less than half the time of the original ;)
