Mk1 Or Mk2?

Hi there guys,

I'm new here and am now interested in a GP2x after reading all the good comments here. I'll use it mainly for it's NeoGeo emu and some video plays. From what I've read, it seems that the MK1 screen has scanlines on it and I actually prefer scanlines on NeoGeo games so that it feels more 'old school'.

Now, are there any reasons for me to get a MK2 instead? Anything other than scanlines that make a MK2 a better purchase?

Also, most importantly, where can I get a MK1 system now? Every place I tried seems to be selling only the MK2 system.

edit: I also read about a MK1 that is NOT a first edition, and something about resistor mod for the LCD, and the different ability to overclock. I would be glad if someone could lecture me about that.

The MK2 adds the new display which is a lot more bright and 'pixelated'-looking, while the MK1 screen looks more like a monitor would, with more blending of dithered colors etc. but 'scanlines' as well due to the interlacing of the display. It's a preference thing and neither is really better.

There is also now a 45-degree rotated stick, so that the diagnols are no longer easier to hit than the ordinals (UP-DOWN-LEFT-RIGHT) as it was in the MK1's. There's also apparently power, or more of it, provided on the EXT port for attached USB Devices, though only 100mA of current is accessible.

The MK1 had the First and 'Second' Editions; the first edition was ridden with issues and came from a different factory than the Second Revision. The 1st was prone to loose headphone jacks or ones that fell INTO the unit, misaligned PCBs causing the stick to hit the left side of the unit, TV Out cables that didn't connect properly due to the aforementioned PCB misalignment, a resistor that caused bad screen flickering (as you mentioned), among others. Get a Second Edition if you get an MK1 unit.

Just the answers I needed, thanks Epicenter!

Now where can I find those 2nd ed MK1 system?

One more thing, the 2nd edition units doesn't have the 'first edition' marking on it correct?

Well you are probaly never going to find a first edition around being there are few, and many of them were returned for defeats.

The first MKI had 'first edition' above it, thats how you can tell the difference.

You should really get an MK2. You won't have to buy a better joystick cap and the screen is better.

Send in an order to GBAX or Gp32z and e-mail them asking specifically for an MK1 Second Edition; or put it in your order special instructions, I believe you get the option on gp32z. They are small enough companies they should have no trouble fulfilling your order if they have one on-hand.

I had a First Edition (pre-order Oct last year :)), I didn't have the misaligned board when I started, I made mine that way, and I was able to center it. The TV-Out cables have no problem on the First Edition, the first set of cable plugs were bad, the Metal hood on the the EXT Socket reaches fully out the bottom of the unit, I doubt it could foul the TV cable. I have of course been wrong before, but I hold my point until I am proved otherwise

A very good idea, it might work, try eBay too, might get one for ~$150, meybe even less :).

MK1s are no longer being produced, so you'll have a hard time getting one.

Yep, but eBay is full of gamers that don't understand anything that isn't associted with "Wii", try there for people unloading "broken" GP2X's that have never heard of a NiMH rechargable battery.

[mini rant] What is up with the "I want a Li-Ion battery pack" people? Take a look at the long-life PSP rechargables, hmm ~$40, riiight. For $40 I can buy a 15-min charger with 8 AA 2500mAh NiMH batteries, let's see Li-Ion compete with that price :). Oh, Right, IT CAN'T.[/mini rant]

Of course the option would be nice, but it isn't rocket science, it is batteries people, if you can't figure out how to get Li-Ion batteries then SHUSH!!

The PSP is sold in bulk, really really big bulk. The standard battery alone is ~$20, that is because millions were made. For the GP2X it wasn't an option, it would have easily driven the price up 50 to 100 dollars, not worth it. Li-Ion is very finicky, NiMH while delivering less power for size and weight still does a bang-up job because it doesn't need complex electronics to monitor the cells and keep them from exploding.
