The Worst Case Senario

Ok, with Sony droping the ball at this E3, I was thinking of possible the worst case senario.

1. Sony fails to capture majority due to $600 pricetag and pissed gamers due to lower specs than promised.
2. Nintendo fails to appeal to former Sony fans because of the lower horsepower, kiddy image issue, and non-conventional controller
3. MS bombs as usual in Japan, and turns Japanese developers off completely.

If all of the above happens, would it be the end of console gaming? Who'll win the market share despite of those problems?

Sony and Nintendo and Microsoft will still be left.

Sony is like a god in Japan (they own everything, even their own underwear line)so... They'll do fine.

Nintendo is currently not affected by sony fans, and doesn't want the graphics whores, plus with their cult following in japan right now and a really loyal fanbase all over the world. They'll do fine.

Microsoft has the american gamers, for the FPS and sports games, plus Halo 3. They'll do fine.

The end of console gaming? na.

In the 'worst case senario', methinks nintendo would win, considering every 8 year old would compell his/her parents to buy it due to the cheap price, "fun" games, etc

IMO

(please dont flame me)

360 will easily lose this battle, as I had predicted before any of them launched and now a lot of people agree with me. Hopefull people will see through Halo 3 for the shitty rehashed crap it is (very unlikely). I think the Wii will win as far as most gamers are concerned, but I wouldn't be suprised if the PS3 sold more, if only because it has 'PS' in the name.

I know that the xbox 360 is not selling that well right now. There has even been a price drop. The core system is now $299 USD and the premium system is selling for $399 USD. Here in the US, that is.
I don't think that Nintendo will have any problem, come this fall.
Sony, I really don't know at this point. They will have to come out with a bang to make us forget the high cost.

I root for a good old fashioned market crash. :)

Just like the one in 84. ah good times. unfortunately i don't think we'll have to worry about it. The market crash of 84 was caused by everybody and their brother flooding the market with crappy software. The stores were not buying it to redistribute which hurt everybody. Today games simply cost to much money to flood the market to cause a crash.

As for worst case? I predict Sony in 3rd in the US and European Market. I don't know why but I just have a baaad felling for Sony and the PS3.

History has proven that the dominant player doesn't necessarily remain so. Just look back 15 or so years. Nintendo owned all in terms of gaming. Their marketshare was around 90%! Then Sega comes and snatches about 50% from Nintendo. And now look at both companies. It didn't take long for both of them to fall behind.

The console market isn't as loyal as some people like to believe. Sure the Sony name is selling some Playstations right now, but I think Sony's getting cocky and losing touch with their customers (much like Sega had). The high price tag was one of the main reasons the Saturn tanked; I guess Sony forgot about that one.

I don't believe for a second that any reason for failure of the Saturn was the pricing. Sega killed the Saturn.

Sega releases the Sega CD, had some games then they quit supporting it. Sega then releases the 32x. Has some games then quits supporting it. By this time consumers do not trust Sega to support the Saturn so they don't buy it. Had the Saturn had the support it needed and deserved, there is not a doubt in my mind that it couldn't have competed with the Playstation. But Sega tainted the system before it was even officially released.

Without a doubt price was one of the reasons (read my above post. That's what I said). At E3 when Sega announced their Saturn was available several months early, Sony hadn't announced pricing. When they did (at that E3 show), it was $100 less than Saturn. That stole away a lot of Sega's momentum. Plus, the complexity of their hardware didn't allow them to match competition when they started dropping the price fo their consoles. Naturally, that was not Saturn's only problem, but it was one.

The problem for Sony is that there's not that much justifying why their console is $200 over the X360 (and much more in Europe). The games for both platforms will look mostly identical. The only real plus of the PS3 is its Blu-Ray drive, but that's a big question mark, really. It's hard to say if that will move consoles or not. People were ready for a replacement for VHS. With HDTV penitration still fairly low, I'm not sure they're ready to rebuy their collections all over again.

I actually hope this will happen, too many games are just for making money now, which saddens me

eh? ALL games are made just to make money.
I don't think so . . . . the mediocre games that are made released almost constantly from companies like EA are definitely that way, but I don't think that ALL games are . . . i'm sure most games would never have been made if it weren't for the money involved, but I don't think they are just for money. I think that some developers also make games for fun or to show the true power of videogames as a modern form of art (Ico comes to mind)

aaahhhh yes Ico. It was the first video game that really gave me the feeling of height. I fell off a wall and it took me a long time to hit the ground. The game took my breath away many times.
