This was done as an experiment, to see how far people's tolerance would stretch, or whether they'd mind it at all. This ad is supposed to be for Holland if I'm not mistaken. Even design-wise it fails in my eyes, sure it's got an original idea (doesn't mean it's a good idea), but racist or not, it looks crappy at best.

This also goes to show that Sony would do anything to appeal to the faceplate generation:

Code:
new colour == better product

- Alex

Sony was obviously thingking, "How can we top the kerfuffle made by the wii? Oh yes, compare our consoles to people and have a white chick strangle a black chick."

i don't see how this is a bad thing. So Sony releases a new color and it's bad? I think its a good idea, just marketed bad, but again, how can a 1 new color release be bad when Nintendo can release 3 types of a GBA, 2 types of DS, and different versions and colors every few months and thats good? I mean look at how many people buy the same hardware but different colors, Sony sees that with the DS and wants to get in on that, i can't say that I blame them. But for fucks sake, those posters are just horrible.

Well the whole idea of having a thousand different colours for every object on the face of the earth, it just enourgaes superficiality and stupidity, of course it's a marketing strategy, and a good one at that, but that doesn't mean that it's a good thing.

I imagine they were thinking :

Let's represent our black product and our white product with a black person and a white person. That way, by using a black person we can't be accused of racial elitism. One of them has to be a woman or we will be accused of sexism.
We need an image that will convey a sense of power and it is obligatory to have some sexual undertones. So the white product, the focus of the campaign, can be a sexually aggressive white woman forcing her attentions on the black guy. To represent this she will be holding his jaw just prior to forcing her tongue down his throat.

Her hand is not on his neck it is holding his jaw. There is no way you can throttle someone holding their chin.

That's what it looks like to me.

What is up with people that they have to concoct stuff like this ? If they look at that image and assume it is a white attacking a black that speaks volumes about them, not Sony. Perhaps they should get out more.

Wouldn't it work better in Dutch if it was meant for Holland ?

disclaimer:
I don't hold any opinions about Sony. I do not currently own anything they produce but that is not a deliberate boycott, I just don't.

Wow, I actually agree with you ;)

I dont know how big the stick is up everyone's asses, but that isn't rascist at all in my eyes. She has her hands around his jaw (which is seductive and domineering), and he has become passive, succuming to her dominating him. In addition, it's a white chick and a black dude. NOT two men, which is less rascist. If anything, it's quite sexual.

I don't think it's a good ad at all. But it isnt rascist, so everyone stop bitching.

This is just pathetic! Why is everyone always thinking "oooew! This is racism"?!?! THIS ISN'T RACISM!!! Even in Holland the name of a product called "negerzoenen" or (niggerkisses, roughly translated). This candy was called like this for ages. And now, because some fucked up person thinks this is racism, they named it "zoenen" or (kisses) after 80 years or something!!!

Even if someone opens a store called "White and Black" people would say it's racism CAUSE THE WORD WHITE COMES FIRST!?

I mean, what the fuck?!?
And if I say that (mostly) only black people complain about this shit, I could be called a racist. I never heard a white guy say that he was disrespected cause he was white.

Like the gamemaster says:
STOP BITCHING!

niggerkisses!? sounds pretty fucking racist to me man, what does it matter if it's been around for 80 years?

I never heard a white guy say that he was disrespected cause he was white.

I have been, a number of times. it's not all difficult to comprehend, esp if your into hip-hop. I get shit for being white when I battle; shit actually raised a lot of controversy at the competition. reverse racism happens all the time

edit: @ DCGM- hahahaa, you fuckin bastard. it's def not on some 8 mile shit lol

This isn't "reverse racism". It's plain racism.

You are right that racism can occur either way, but the fact that you refer to it as "reverse racism" still suggests that white on black racism is in some way more real.

Ok:

When i first saw this, i thought two things,

The glack guy is a girl, therefore, catfight.
Her hand is on the "girl's" throat, therefore strangling, or showing superiority.

Now i have established that those two ideas are not true, i can honestly say, non racist.

this is a hot topic in a bunch of soc classes I've taken. you have to understand that reverse racism is a concept; it's not meant to be offensive. I agree with you- it's just a term used by a number of sociologists (I'm a soc major).

a popular theory lies in power; those that have no power cannot be racist, so technically black people cannot be racist, hence the concept of reverse racism. I think it's ridiculous, and when I heard some girl saying it's impossible for a black person to be racist, I almost slapped her.

Maybe we're missing the whole point

Does anyone know if those two people in the ad are famous or something? Maybe thats from a movie or something

Cause if not, thats just plain bad advertising

You're referring to reverse discrimination, not "reverse racism". They can be two seperate concepts (and in this case, are)

I thought the same as you.

By the way, did you notice how this Sony PSP ad also got us talking about it, about how borderline it is? I'm telling you, every controversy out there is done on specific purpose - any publicity is good publicity.

All publicity is certainly not good. I hardly think the uproar over stuck/dead pixels at the PSP's launch was benefitial.

But regardless I think Sony has proven time and time again recently that they do not think. No one believes Sony's a racist company, but the message is playing on the color of these two people and suggesting the black person (or PSP) should fear the white person (again, PSP) with "PSP White is coming." It's just a very tasteless, pathetic ad.

That of course is your opinion. I disagree with you.

Also, I don't feel it's fair that you're catagorizing the stuck pixel controversy and an advertisement together. They're two different things entirely.

The message isnt a black male and a white male, or a black female and a white female. The black man is being dominated by the white WOMAN. Please take that into account as it's quite different now.

Indeed the ad does touch people in the wrong spot, but everyone IS talking about the psp. As others have said, it's getting major publicity. I think they thought this one out quite well, and decided it was a risk they were willing to take. I see nothing wrong about it.
