    Uh... hello there... what's new?

GeForce Now? Having played far too much Just Cause 3 than is healthy via GeForce Now I really appreciated it for not having to deal with the space and GPU requirements of modern games. Except for some reason GeForce Now required a GeForce GPU rendering the whole concept somewhat redundant. I...

    32blit Retro-inspired Homebrew Handheld with Open-source Firmware

The STM32 part we're using has been tested and approved at 480MHz, a 20% overclock from the original 400MHz clock speed. This predictably has pretty much direct translation to framerate improvement (since it's mostly CPU bound as there's no GPU).

Thank you! I still remember the GP2X fondly although I sold mine years and years and years ago mostly due to it gobbling AA batteries faster than I could supply them! I really hope 32blit captures the same lightning in a bottle communities like this have found. While it’s super awesome to l...

    32blit Retro-inspired Homebrew Handheld with Open-source Firmware

Not yet- tools will be available to beta backers first so we can get some feedback and finalise them without too many voices pitching in. We're pushing stuff forward on about a dozen fronts. I had a full in-browser Lua-running engine and IDE with intellisense working, but we've drastically...

I believe I've heard of it but never actually tinkered with one. I've got VGA output working on, and games written on an Arduino Due using a Megadrive controller for giggles. We actually sell Arduboy which I guess is the portable equivalent of this in a way, so we're well aware this market is...

True. That! That being said, we're doing extensive testing at 320x240 to see how far we can push this thing and many of the possible optimisations for pixel pushing remain to be found since they might involve SIMD instructions.

It’s a low resolution for sure- but we’ve already got some really satisfying results out of it. I’m definitely more in the “force people to make interesting choices with limited resources” than the “eh! Just run in 320x240 mode.” The stuff people have done with PICO-8s 128x128 is nothing short...

@zoranc we're just as keen on getting the d-pad right. Hopefully the beta testers will help us do this- although the parts we're using have already been battle-tested and - like you say - we're using the hardware ourselves so we'll certainly catch all but the subtlest of problems. The prototype...

Being successful enough that there’s 1Tb of first-party software people want to install would sure be a nice problem to have! The flash is also execute-in-place, quad-SPI meaning the chip can effectively stream instructions directly from it with no loss of performance versus its internal flash...

    32blit Retro-inspired Homebrew Handheld with Open-source Firmware

Haha @Chip yes I have a PocketCHIP too- the low-priced CHIP board was - I believe - a pretty key catalyst to the release and aggressive pricing of the Pi Zero so we owe it a lot! No life savings at risk- we’re a 6 (I think? Time goes so fast) year old company with dozens of successful products...

@ClockworkCoder yes! Potentially more on that if we show them off during the campaign. @pmprog you're welcome! I'd rather people knew what we were going for than trying to pass it off as the be-all-end-all of handhelds.

    32blit Retro-inspired Homebrew Handheld with Open-source Firmware

@ClockworkCoder I hope you have as much fun with it as I'm having with my prototype unit! @pmprog - 1. We're seriously considering routing whatever pins are left over onto some kind of internal "hack" header. There are surprisingly few left, though, since the screen takes a whole bunch 2. No...

    32blit Retro-inspired Homebrew Handheld with Open-source Firmware

Thank you. We have *plenty* to do on the software and assets front to make this really rock - not to mention we’d like to live stream some dev tinkering and demos. I’d love to see shoulder buttons- but only because I have a design for them which I think is absolutely genius but in reality...

    32blit Retro-inspired Homebrew Handheld with Open-source Firmware

SD card is something we considered- but since this thing will have gobs of - with any luck mounted as mass storage - flash on it, it will be redundant anyway for the majority of users. I think SD would more likely find uses among those who get emulators up and running (if they do!) and not...
