Problem Solved!
Had a hunch so went to the local Office Depot and bought a brand new 2GB SD card.
Every .avi that didn't play before plays OK now.
I was testing with two different SD cards but there must have been problems with both of them.
I had previously used these same cards for games on...
ARRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGH!!!
(Frustration level raising)
Back to the orginal problem.
Newly made .avi's are not playing on the GP2X.
It seemed to work for one day but not now.
I need a sanity check.
I've created two short clips. Each from a different DVD and using mencoder for one and transcode...

That did the trick.
I had previously used yum to install the mplayer and MEncoder packages.
Removed the packages and compiled them from source.
Tried a couple different DVDs and the .avi's play OK now.
Since I've got this thread going, one more question if you don't mind.

I'm getting the same error message using clips encoded with reencode.
Here is the mplayer file info for latest test .avi:
AVI file format detected.

I'm using dvd::rip on linux to convert DVDs.

I have created a xvid/mp3 .avi file but when I attempt to view it on the GP2x I get the following error:

Hi All,
I always seem to be bumping the shoulder buttons while watching movies on my Most Excellent GP2X .
Any way I can turn these off or re-assign them while using MP2X or the default movie player.
