From the same devs that did the great little RPG Pier Solar comes..

After more than 4 epic years of development, WaterMelon Games is proud to present its new 16-Bit game: PAPRIUM (code-name: "ProjectY"), a postapocalyptic, outrageous, street brawler. PAPRIUM has been crafted at WM's Magical Game Factory using Investor's votes and suggestions. PAPRIUM has been developed by a team driven by true passion and 16-Bit excellence.

Year 8A2, somewhere at equidistant point between Shanghai, Tokyo and Pyongyang, a Megapolis rose from ashes of the shortest but most devastating nuclear war in history, its name is PAPRIUM. BRUTAL, MASSIVE. You will fight your way through the city with Tug, Alex and Dice. Redefine the word justice, deal with the BLU drug temptation, and more importantly: STAY ALIVE.

Perhaps I'll finally be able to scratch my Streets Of Rage itch that's been nagging me for the last 23 years!

I've just aborted Pier Solar (from those guys) a few days ago right before the final boss, so let me say this:

This game has all the flaws of games from a bygone era but practically none of the upsides.
- bad to no documentation of (important) spells
- places you can't go back to anymore
- terrible save system
- mandatory grinding in not fun to play battles
- flat story
- quite unclear missions and random running around talking to every npc multiple times to make progress

I've tried hard and endured a lot but in the end I had to abort it during the final bossfights since you can't rest/heal in the last town and if you've reached the last save point, you can't even go back to the last shops and are stuck with whatever you got. If you didn't grind enough to stand a chance in the 4 bossfights (which prevent you from healing in between by the way) , then you are screwed.
In order to see both endings you even have to endure this twice.
You can set the random encounter rate in the game manually between 0% and 800% at any time, which made me set it to zero and only up if I needed to level up for a boss. That isn't feasible in the end anymore though since you can't rest or shop anymore.
Since I've reached the final boss with no way back but not enough grinding beforehand, I had no other option but to abort since the fights would have been extremely frustrating if winnable at all.

There were several unreachable chests in the game I thought you'd need to go back to but then I've read online that there's an opening spell for those you got at a completely random point in the game without much notice.

This game doesn't seem to have been designed to be fun, kicks you in the face out of nowhere for no good reason at some points and often lets you wonder why you're stuck again now and what the last gained spells are actually for.

Not fun, feels like I've wasted my time and money.
Oh and the "HD" version sucks since it is imcomplete and still randomly using low res sprites, so I played in the more consistent low resolution style.

I won't buy from those people again for a while.

@Klumpen , you know, your description of the final boss battle reminds to me what I hated from all the Final Fantasy games I played (expecially VII)... :(

@Klumpen didn't know about that game, but now i want to play it o_O i don't mind grinding, or dealing with random shit games throw at me (made it through earthbound; still not sure wtf that was), so i guess i'll check it out :3

I have seen the trailer only now, and WTF !! :D Awesome !!

It's made with blasting technology !! I felt like when watching the old advertisings :)

The commercial was great. It starts without sound, and a cool "is he really holding it and letting it go" and "was he photoshopped out... or in...?"
Then some brutal moments, and ends in soothing music with information.

The game looks normal. Comparable to some mame games I've seen. Interesting, but not my cup of tea. I am afraid the commercial is better than the game.

It seems for a lot of these companies that make games for retro consoles their motto is 'just make it like old games but harder'. They think since they are older the game won't be any good unless really difficult. They also try to make it like the old games, ignoring all the advances from the last 20+ years in the given genre.

The thing is I can go back and play games I did when I was a kid and yes they are easy but that is mainly due to I have the game freaking memorized. I know I need to conserve magic in this room because in the next room I need it. I go and play retro games from around when I was a kid but never got the opportunity to play and THEY ARE CHALLENGING because I don't have the things memorized. I don't see how making something painfully difficult makes it fun. Studies even show that as someone ages their reflexes in games get slower so if you are making a game for a retro console don't make it harder than the games that from the era you are emulating. Also, they need to keep in mind that people their age don't have hundreds of hours to spend passing these games. Kids that are fast and have disposable time probably won't play their game because it doesn't look as good as the games they are currently playing.

So, if a game is made for a retro console it should have 90% of the development spent on things like story and character development(not grinding, giving the characters personality), two things these companies don't focus on because they are worried it will be too easy to pass.

Thankfully, this doesn't look to be the sort of game where story is so important, being a scrolling beat-em-up. And those are supposed to be quite hard. I agree that RPGs in this day and age shouldn't be complete slogs, but on this sort of game which is really just lots of dumb fun (if done right), I'm not so bothered.

Looks solid. As i mentioned at dc talk it may come to the dreamcast. I like these types of games and would play it.

I'm interested.
Megadrive beat em up with gold chain wearing sharks [0:58] ... I'm tempted, it's just over £70 though which is a bit pricey for a game, as nice as it is to get the proper box and manual
