I figured out what was slowing down the game (broken broadphase collision detection for walls) and fixed it locally. When the compo is over, I'll update the game with better controls. I didn't realize that my input class was not going to cut it until too late, so I reverted to these controls...
That was on Linux. I'm not sure what you mean by 'solo'. I just waited a long time and it shook and shook without breaking. A couple hours later, I restarted the game and he was hatched. (No I did not just sit there watching a shaking egg for hours! :) )

Something simple and helpful would be to mark a sector red after you visit every star in it. The tougher way would be to red-out each section of a sector that you've explored all the stars in. Maybe just a special marker for stars that you've visited?
