Since you can't upgrade to a Rebirth Pandora, I'm guessing the parts cost is essentially the same for the 1GHz model?
If you're on a budget, you can never go wrong with Sony MDR V6's.
Or maybe you can (V6s try to be flat, but some people find them tiring -- a little heavy on the ~10KHZ area but light on the sub-bass).
I still love them though.
This question isn't related to your problem, but for people running Windows 9X in Qemu,
are you using Rain (http://www.benchtest.com/rain.html) or similar?
I'm sure it would reduce processor/battery usage.
I don't know how good Linux's xpad module is, but the user-space driver xboxdrv appears to support it (https://github.com/Grumbel/xboxdrv/pull/39)
You may need to (find someone to) compile it yourself from git as I don't think there are binaries anywhere for arm.
