Is there any way to change the show desktop icon? It doesn't have a 'properties' item on the right-click menu... alternatively is there any way to show desktop via the command line, so that I can assign it to a launcher with a custom icon...?

You could just remove the icon, enjoy the gained space in the applet-bar and press alt+ctrl+d (remember "d" like "desktop") when you want to minimize all windows. :) Not sure about command-line-ways.

ive hacked matchbox window manager into the xfce desktop system and that shortcut doesnt work. Plus I want to make the system intuitive for other people.

You do know that matchbox-wm has got a manual? :p

Well I highly doubt that the matchbox desktop command will show the xfce desktop.

Anyway I'm onto stage 2 now and I've got rid of the desktop completely, so it's not really relevant any more :)
