Compression?

i just bought a 4gb card and the working memory is only 3.7gb (i thought bout 3.9 :( )!!
so heres my question:
can i compress the files on my sd card? and will this slow performance (its a normal card, not 150x :( )
and by how much?

p.s. you want the card to be FAT32 right?
 
You can only compress individual files and only if the program or emulator you're loading them into supports (zip) compression. There's no compatible filesystem compression for all intents and purposes.
 
I guess it would be possible to set up a compression loop-back device and use that. I don't think it's worth the hassle though. Also, you would have to be pretty linux savvy to pull it off.

4,000,000,000 / 1024000000 = 3.90 is probably the mistake you made.

1GB = 1,073,741,824
4,000,000,000 / 1,073,741,824 = 3.72

Or 4GB = 4,294,967,296 bytes
4,000,000,000 - 294,967,296 = 3,705,032,704 bytes

You can compress the executables, and most emu's support compressed roms. Check the readme's.

Storage media manufacturers use 1000 = 1kB. Everyone else uses 1024 = 1kB. So 4GB to them is 4,000,000,000 bytes, whereas to us it's 4,294,967,296 bytes.

It lets them trick people into thinking they are buying cards/harddisks/etc bigger than they actually are, and it still works.
