Samsung Smart Window

I want to make myself a privacy screen and glasses now, that's a nice idea. Wonder if I could do it without destroying myself opening a monitor. An old post about building arcade cabinets and monitors holding deadly power even when unplugged made me think twice.

This is a nice effect though.
Arcade monitors terrify me for that reason. :p (More so than other CRTs, since their guts are always exposed.)

Those are CRTs. They need heavy capacitors to build the charge between the emitter and the screen. Something like that, the exact physics are lost on me in this.

LCDs don't need that same kind of charge, all they're doing is twisting a little piece of crystal.

How long do you have to wait for the capacitors to self-discharge?

I'm not entirely sure that they do, Binky.

I've seen messing with old, long-disused arcade monitors warned against just as much as recently-used ones. Those tubes are deadly if you're stupid with them.

... although that _could_ just be a warning to people who take the back off, turn it on to see if it works, and then poke things.

I probably ought to go and find out about arcade cabinet hacking. <_<

CRT are dangerous, LCD can have two dangerous part... the first one being the power supply. switching PS are quite dangerous, but it's line voltage (more or less some 400v CC is not that fun).

the second part is the CCFL inverter, assuming your lcd use a ccfl...

I prefer big windows with great views, old house huge windows are best! :D

Seriously now, it would be nice to get the ANOTHER WORLD kind of 3d block monitor...I see around the net this already have some prototypes, best you don´t keyboard or mouse them, but move things with hands.

I've played with polarized light before, taking apart old calculators, pagers, and such, but since I've never seen the opposite side I'd always thought the light going both ways thru the filter was polarized, especially since I recall seeing shadows created by the shapes displayed on the background of LCD screen. But if it's true that the light only polarizes on one side, then bring this on. I could watch porn on a transparent, one way screen and none would be the wiser. :D

hum, I guess this is for you...

Awesome. I should try that someday.

CCFL invertors ... I have no idea what that is yet, need to google that one.

[Potentially stoopid question alert!]

If im only looking to do this little privacy screen mod on my old LCD, I guess i could do this without interferring with the PS or the line voltage?

Or is it quite likely that youd need to access either of these to get this done? Id imagine this mod could be done [with care] without touching the back end of the telly, which is where the PS would be, right?

What if i wore a pair of marigolds, the old washing up rubber gloves - probably about as protective as a bin bag condom eh?

honesty, if the LCD is unplugged you should be fine, also I've been shocked by a ccfl inverter, they're not going to kill you, you'll just smell like toast.

and here's the instructions for the privacy monitor
