Two slashdot news

Wow that SleepWell idea sounds like the guy could be on a real winner for maxing out battery life. Whats the ramifications of the second link (sorry i'm a technoklutz)?

When can we start doing this on Pandora?
Already. SleepWell is not a device specific change, it's a change in when the Access Points (the routers, etc) decide to deliver packets to their clients (Pandoras, cellphones, laptops, etc., "your WIFI devices"). The idea is that APs are aware of one another and avoid transmitting data when other APs are also transmitting data.

For example, your router would take turns with your neighbor's router in sending data. That way, there would be less signal collision. This same problem is also part of why you don't want to share router channels with your neighbors.

The key paragraph in the article is on page 2:

Always-on APs monitor the ongoing wireless traffic of nearby APs. In a SleepWell network, each APs track the periodic bursts of traffic from surrounding access points. With that information, each one can dynamically re-schedule its own traffic burst to coincide with an open period, creating minimal overlap with other bursts.

For fancy graphics and voodoo effects to simulate wizz-bang guru slabs, all we need to do is tweak the existing window manager with nice graphics files. Its really enough, already. Unity, bleh!
