World Editor

Over the past couple days, I have been thinking about what kind of games I would like to see on the GP2X. Sure, the odd shooter would be nice, fightings games and classis puzzle games i enjoy a lot too. But, to me, the best genre of games on handhelds and any console/PC are the strategy and RPGs, which is why I want to see if not a strategy game or an RPG, a World Editor that would at least give the community an opportunity to produce their own.

Also in these past couple days, I have been looking at a program bundled with the Warcraft III software, their own version of a World Editor. Now, Warcraft III is a strategy game, so naturally, most games you produce with this program are strategy based. However, I have seen RPGs, believe it or not, produced with this software. A little over a year ago, one of the best was a WoW mock up, that used the game's "heroes" as your main character and there were a number of quests, etc. involved with the map.

What I'm gettin at is, we could make a World Editor of our own, not only designed for strategy, or RPGs, or shooters, or w/e.. But a World Editor that consists of multiple child programs so you can define AI, Triggers, Sounds, Objects, Campaigns/Quests, etc. The advantage to this is, this program would be specially designed from the GP2X, so no porting of other Game Makers, or bothering their devs involved.

Just so you know, I do have programming experience, over 2 years worth, in C++, C# and very little ASM. My problem is, however, I've been out of coding for 2 months now, so i have some catching up to do. Is there anyone interested at all in doing a project with me like this? No matter how basic or complicated it turns out to be?

If so, let me know here, as I don't check my email as often as a forum :) .

Thanks.

I think there's a few similar projects for GP32 already, but they're more specialised. They will probably get ported to the GP2X though.

Heh, I've been out for over a year now so I'm really out of practice. The GP2X is giving me a much-needed kick in the pants. My C++ was never really that great to begin with but if something like this gets going I'd be glad to contribute whatever I can to the best of my ability. :)

Are you thinking of somewhere in the lines of ZZT and Megazeux? Or perhaps we could create a GCS kind of like BANG!. That website was created by me, but I am not the author of the program.

Megazeux looks closer to what I was looking @ making..

This is the Warcraft III World Editor:

Of course, any graphics would have to be 2D, as I understand the GP2X only has 2D acceleration. But from this, you can see that predefined terrains, units, doodads, etc. all come with the software, all you have to do is define scenarios, basic AI, and so on..

I would like to do something more graphical than Megazeux tho from those pics on their homepage

It would be nice to have our own RPG maker type of program. Gigas is dead and we cant use the actual RPGmaker without some heavy code porting, Zot! and Fenix might be okay but you have to spend a lot of time learning their language. VNS is easier than any of them but has limits on what graphics and sound you can use, has a memory leak and it's geared more for things like Myst or dating games.
