Hi, I have upgraded our tree in the last weeks up to 4.2-rc7 (yesterday) and it still does not work well on the OMAP5432 EVM. The EVM does not boot properly and hangs after ~10 seconds without enlightening messsages. The 4.1 branch works fine.
Today, I had some time to look again into it and was able to make the 4.2-rc7 kernel boot if compiled with omap2plus_defconfig.
So we appear to have some driver that was upgraded by 4.2-rc* in a conflicting way that is configured differently.
What is the easiest way to find out which one it is? (is there some Kconfig-bisecting tool?)
BR and thanks for help, Nikolaus
PS: the new defconfig is “letux_defconfig” (to have a more general name than “gta04_defconfig") tree: http://git.goldelico.com/?p=gta04-kernel.git;a=shortlog;h=refs/heads/4.2-rc7

I've just compiled your 4.2-rc7 kernel (with a slightly modified letux_defconfig to enable a few more drivers and features debian needs), and it runs on my board. There is some weirdness going on with the display though (using hdmi output, with omapdss.def_disp=hdmi on the kernel command line), with the displaymanager taking a few minutes to show up, but after that everything seems to work fine. (console works fine when the displaymanager is stopped, restarting it gives about 2 minutes of blank screen before things show up, no obvious warnings/errors in any logs)
I did see a lot of warnings when compiling the drivers/video/fbdev/omap2/displays-new/* stuff.
Of course it might also work because i only have a bare board, without all the extra bits attached.

Forget that bit, that seems to have been caused by the firewall not working properly thanks to some kernel modules i forgot to enable.
With the firewall disabled, the modified 4.2-rc7 works fine as well.

are there some configs you can recommend to add to letux_defconfig?
), and it runs on my board.

Thanks for all the tests!
I have to check what I am doing wrong. Maybe it has something to do with my broken EVM. I2C2 is broken on the hardware side and therefore I run a patched device tree to remap the I2C to GPIO pins and use the bitbang driver. This might have an influence, although it is the same with the 4.1 kernel and there it works.
So knowing that it can work is very valuable.
BR and thanks, Nikolaus
PS: the display-new warnings are because we currently use the shell-script drivers and the panel-mipi-debug driver. The others need some code cleanup.
I have now continued with experiments.
With still using omap2plus_defconfig there is a
INFO: possible circular locking dependency detected
Did you see something similar?

Hi, I have upgraded our tree in the last weeks up to 4.2-rc7 (yesterday) and it still does not work well on the OMAP5432 EVM. The EVM does not boot properly and hangs after ~10 seconds without enlightening messsages. The 4.1 branch works fine.
I've just compiled your 4.2-rc7 kernel (with a slightly modified letux_defconfig to enable a few more drivers and features debian needs
are there some configs you can recommend to add to letux_defconfig?
), and it runs on my board.
I've also tried compiling with the plain letux_defconfig, and it runs fine as well.
Forget that bit, that seems to have been caused by the firewall not working properly thanks to some kernel modules i forgot to enable.
With the firewall disabled, the modified 4.2-rc7 works fine as well.

I do see it with omap2plus_defconfig , but not on the others

Ok!
Then it is nothing to dig deeper into. Will maybe be solved “magically” by other upstream developers…
BR and thanks, Nikolaus
Now it did boot with letux_defconfig.
I just recompiled the kernel.
Now it boots and looks better than ever.
Hm. Maybe some drivers were outdated and now recompiled by deconfiguring and reconfiguring?
Or it just came to my mind that there is one minor change compared to the last test: I have merged the latest memory leak fixes for OMAP-DSS and there might have been a bug in my own workaround.
Well, anyways many thanks for help!
BR, Nikolaus
PS: as soon as we have Pyra CPU boards with working DRAMs, this µSD card should already boot since we are almost compatible to the EVM hardware :)

I've just compiled your 4.2-rc7 kernel (with a slightly modified letux_defconfig to enable a few more drivers and features debian needs
are there some configs you can recommend to add to letux_defconfig?
I just saw your tweet about the kernel config, and was reminded that I hadn't posted this list yet.
It's what I enable on top of the letux_defconfig to get the os fully working, and a few extra drivers for various hardware I have connected to the board.
For the final pyra version a proper kernel config should be done, based on the default debian kernel config, so that at least all drivers and features expected by debian are enabled.
General setup / [*] Namespaces support - makes pulseaudio work, and some other things
System Type / Multiple platform selection / [ ] ARMv6 based platforms (ARM11) - disable arm6, stops xorg crashes, before this we used the nothumb patched xorg package, with this the default debian package works.
System Type / [*] Support for the Large Physical Address Extension
Kernel Features /Preemption Model (Preemptible Kernel (Low-Latency Desktop))
Device Drivers / Input device support / [*] Joysticks/Gamepads / <M> X-Box gamepad support (+ rumble + led)
Device Drivers / Sound card support / Advanced Linux Sound Architecture / USB sound devices / <M> USB Audio/MIDI driver
Device Drivers / HID support / Special HID drivers / <M> Logitech devices - needed for logitech unified receiver wireless mouse/keyboard
File systems / CD-ROM/DVD Filesystems / <M> ISO 9660 CDROM file system support
File systems / Miscellaneous filesystems / <M> Aufs (Advanced multi layered unification filesystem) support - aufs needs to be patched in of course, the dbp packages heavily depend on it.
File systems / Network File Systems / <M> CIFS support (advanced network filesystem, SMBFS successor) / [*] SMB2 and SMB3 network file system support
Networking support / Networking options / Network packet filtering framework (Netfilter) - pretty much everything in there is needed for proper firewall support
Networking support / Bluetooth subsystem support / <M> RFCOMM protocol support + <M> HIDP protocol support - bluetooth gps and keyboards
[*] Virtualization Virtualization / [*] Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) support - won't do much without some u-boot magic, which i couldn't get working (not that i really tried).

note that LPAE only works on Cortex A7/A15 or newer and is only really needed for virtualization (for us).
Hi Nikolaus,

Best would be to run git bisect with letux_defconfig (good 4.1 -> bad 4.2-rc7) and do some test and find bad commit. There doesn't exists any tool to check Kconfig only ;).
