New Server!

Is the server slowing down again? My computer currently seems to take a long time to download a page, although it connects initially fairly quickly.

The repo for example (which claims to be running on the same machine) seems to be full speed still though, so I suspect it's a forum software issue.

Is anyone else seeing this?

Edit: Just possibly, it might be slow CSS loading instead. My browser often draws badly laid out layouts before the CSS has loaded on this site especially.

Looking more and more like it's just slow CSS. While the initial connection does seem like it could be faster (I've timed it to between 4 and 10 seconds, while the repo is sub-one-second), once a connection is made, my download of the page html using curl completes basically close to as fast as my buffer can scroll it seems to me. So it's a combination of slow initial connections and slow includes of some sort.

I wonder if https negotiation is taking too long - but https connections elsewhere are not detectably slower than plain old http connections, so it's not usually a source of slowness. I don't know of a way to debug that though, so it can only be a suspicion.

Yes, something does seem to have reverted - both negotiating a connection and downloading a page and all of its includes is much faster. Connections are sub-second, which is comparable to other sites including google's homepage, and page rendering comes in one blob now, not a series of updates. Nice!

@EvilDragon : I just tried to create a new account, and verification is done through "swiping" a blue square from the left to the right of some ruler.

Does that mean "robots" are now able to solve that kind of problem ?

Cheers, Magic Sam

Since this site supports script-less clients quite well, I guess that's what they use. A 'slidey box' must be a javascript (or java) trick, but if you turn off javascript I guess it falls back to static captcha's or something.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are a number of people who are actually paid to solve captchas and post junk, poor souls.
The forum here shunts first posts that contain URLs (weird fake medicines, sports equipment, etc) into the moderation queue, which does make things enormously easier!

I just did try deleting my cookie and go through to create an account, running no javascript, and it did present me with a standard static google captcha below the 'slide to unlock' thing which just did nothing when I tried to grab it and move it. I didn't go any further beyond unlocking the captcha, because I didn't actually want to create an account though, so I don't know for sure if solving the capcha is all that is needed.
