Easy Overclocking


hi , :blink: l feel silly for asking this but on the multimeter what do i set the dial to to measure the resitance i have the following settings to mesure with:

2000K
200K
20K
2000
200

ive been getting some odd readings you see and im wondering if i have the meter setup right, allso what kind of resistance should i be aiming to get near to? so far whenver i apply this mod the system wont even get upto 166 after removeing it its back to normal again...

This makes perfect sense... it explains why every time I tried, I would start on the R52 first, and would usually go from it having no effect to having too much effect (system wont boot or wont run apps) with just a couple strokes of the pencil, but once I get it right to that border where the system seems to be indicating too much voltage, a light coating over the R42 makes it work perfectly... makes sense that the R42 is stepping down the voltage just enough to split the difference.

Thanks for the clarification on the battery voltage by the way I was wondering about that, if there was some kind of step up converter that raised the voltage to a certain point regardless of what the batteries or adapter was putting out... that explais why a 2v AC adapter works just as well as two 1.5v batteries.

Only question about this mod for me now is if it's gonna have to be 'fine tuned' every so often or if it will be permanent... so far still holding up fine for me.

hi , ive just tryed a diffrernt pencil grade on only one resistor now i can clock to just under 200, is it me or does sound go really odd(higher pitch etc) when running sonic 1 at 180+ , eather way these mods kick ass , might put the modders out of business :D

Ad a drop of super-glue, should make it permanent. :D Maybe not.

Umm. No and no!. These are wrong.

A 3v3 regulator stops the voltage rising above 3.3volts. It won't hold a lower supply up.

And 0Ohms in parallel with any resistor is 0Ohms. You've effectively shorted it out of the circuit and all the current passes through the 0Ohm trace.

Basts quote about Alkalines being better for overclocking does sound true though.

Read first... approaches 0. I didn't say 0. You can still run 1 ohm in parrallel with 470kohms.

Second, a power regulator stabilizes power. If you want, check your vcore with both alks and rechargeables.

Hmmm, seems to be some confusion here...

a 3.3V regulator will take a higher voltage and approximate it down to 3.3V. It will take a small amout of voltage and current for itself, but in general, with the correct usage of capacitors, it will give the correct voltage as long as the input as high enough.

However, the GP32 doesn't use one of these - NiMH batteries provide 2.4V normally, and even alkalines only provide just under 3V normally. The core of the processor requires 1.8V, but the rest requires 3.3V, and so there's a 3.3V stepup regulator in there. I think there's a 5V stepup regulator too, but I'm not 100% sure of that.

This is what I was trying to get at, it steps up to 3.3, not limit it below 3.3. As far as 5v, I'm not sure. I think in the white sheets, it calls for two 3.3v regulators, maybe because of current limitations, don't quote me on this cause the white sheets are 600 pages long + it doesn't matter any way, unless you want to try and mod a PSone screen into it.

It' s crazy! I tried this tips and the result is... absolutely nothing :D , I tried the R52 first, then I tried to draw more with the pencil, and next I tried the R42, and still the same result, I even tried to draw too much pencil for the GP to don' t run to show that it can work, and no results, the GP runs, the speed is the same... It ' s quite weird... Does anyone knows why?

You still have to change the speed in the program/emulator you are using, It doesn`t do it automatically. :rolleyes:

More results:
The broken gp32 which I used for testing the mod does not overclock more at 1.95v than default 1.78v... only 156 MHz stable. Very frustrating... so I attempt the mod on my working GP32, also only 156 stable by default. The results are a bit better, is stable at 166 MHz with 1.95v.

So in my case I think the mod is not worth :angry:

Further proof that it is luck of the draw! :D

On a side note, I need to retract what I said about resistance. I must have been thinking inverse voltage or some such nonsense. As a resister approaches 0 ohms in parrallel, so does the resistance of the entire circuite. (R1xR2)/(R1+R2) duh!

You still have to change the speed in the program/emulator you are using, It doesn`t do it automatically. rolleyes.gif
Thanks to think that I' m dumb ;) I actually tried the Clockspeed tool...

But when I saw the message above I realised that I had maybe the same problem, I had to test the voltage to know...
 
the pencil i used by the way is a "110-2H" a fine sharp type lead , by applying it to one resistor (the bottom one) it seems i can now to 200 , i just need a good tester program now ....

Three days since I "coulored" r48.... still 252 mhz stable:) when I tried it first nothing happened it, took me about an hour to find out how to obtain max clockspeed
 
yeah for anyone having problems you just have to keep trying if you have the patience... it is luck of the draw and it's also just very inaccurate... you just gotta keep trying different amounts on one and then both resistors... it took me about 2 hours of fiddling to get it 'right'


fourth day for me of clockign 184mhz on previously 164mhz GP... everything running great, no smoke coming from the system yet :D And feeling glad I was one of the 'brave ones'.
 
Yay! I suceed to push my Gp over 200mhz, but I would check the Voltage before using it full time...

I feel a little newbie/stupid to ask this question, but how can I check it? I' ve got the object but I don' t know how to use it :D
