I'm thinking of zipping my roms to save space and allow me to add more to the SMC. What I'm unsure about is the method used for zipping. I use 7-Zip 4.20b and will be saving as *.zip. Within the GUI, I'm given the options of Store, Normal or Ultra. Which is the best to use? It mentions the memory usage for compressing/uncompressing. Do I need to worry about that on the GP32?

:)

Hi ya

I thought (and I am open to correction) that DRMD and opensnes can use ZIP files but only 1 game per ZIP

I have all my roms zipped up that way so I still have 8 files but each file is 1/3 smaller.

I imagine ultra and other non NORMAL commpression would not be supported but I really have no idea, it depends on the library used by the emulator.

The more you compress something, the longer it takes to uncompress it each and every time that you load it.
thats wrong, the decompression is allways the same, the compression level adjust the search functions of the compressor, they have no impact at the final file.
as allready stated only 1 file per zip. winrar haves a option to compress evry file in a single zip.

When archiving with normal compression it says it will use 3MB for compressing and 2MB for decompressing. Does this apply on the PC or would this memory be used on the GP32?

Indeed, I stand corrected. Winrar rocks. :p

Ok here is the easy way to do this. Grab and install the latest version of winrar.

Then select all the roms you want to zip and chose add to archive.

Set the compression for max and the type for zip which is the slowest and then if you go under the options. However, this will make themt he smallest size.

Now you can go under the topins forbet which tab since i am not at my home PC but you are chose to put each archive in their own seporate folder and bam!!!!

Wait a little while and now you are done. I always compress when possible as only DR.MD is a little but slower when loading but it saves a lot of space!!!

7-zip Best Options:

Type: Zip
Compression: Ultra
Method: Deflate
Dictionary Size: 32kb
Word Size: 255

Pretty much just the highest settings for zip.

And yes, these decompress with ANY zip decompressor so they WILL work in ANY zip supporting emulator.
