Well ScummVM is moving on but very slowly as many of you have noticed and commented ;) and I was putting out a bit of an open request for anybody with some C/C++ skills who has a GP32 and is familiar with both the GamePark SDK and accessing parts of the hardware directly via ASM, custom pseudo SDK’s etc. to drop me a mail or leave a comment if they feel they can help (if you have other questions just leave a comment).

The development environment is GCC/ARM based so SDT/ADS compilation is not really an option.

I am looking to get a new public release out the door (test release that is, it’s a new backend remember so it does not necessarily have all the features or qualities :) of the older releases) but I have a bunch of bugs I want to squish and I just don’t have the time to do it on my own in anything resembling a sensible amount of time.

A few main problems are blitting related and a big memory leak or 3 ;) so that should give you an idea of the type of help I am looking for.

sry that i cant code, but i hope some coders will help.. a new scummvm version would be awesome :)
thanks djwillis for your work on this project!

Thanks for your work :) I'm not a coder, but I can do some betatesting if you want ;)
BTW is Simon, BASS, FOTAQ, Gobliiins and/or ITE supported in this new version?

All my working on testing is done with the SCUMM engine, SAGA, BASS, FOTAQ and Goblins 'should' work if I can fix the memory leaks so the GP32 has enough spare RAM to do something with them other then load them and bork ;).

So how big project are we talking about? e.g. number of files & lines of code...? And apart from mentioned problems what is still missing (no.. I don't believe DJ would be that stupid he would list all missing/broken stuff and scare all sane devs away)? ;) Or are all the juicy details reserved for the next code monkey? :p

Hi Spiv,

I'll do a Known Issues list and portion it out. Trust me, just seeing my name scares sane devs away ;).

The GP32 backend is really quite small I guess, it's the bastardised SDL pseudo-wrapper bit's that cause most of the problems. Oh and my crappy sound-ring but I am trying to use your mLib to get around that ;).

Yep. I will consistently bump this thread until either I get banned or someone takes up the project.

I'm just pretending I've not seen this thread before! Ooops silly me I've bumped it.

Come on people. Scumm is one of the most impressive things on the GP32 (Just show someone Loom talkie version and you'll see what I mean) and the chance to make it better will earn you huge amounts of respect from those of us that can't code.

Pasted in from distant-earth blog:

I saw your post about this on GP32Xtreme a while back; I've been toying with the idea of getting in touch ever since. Here I am! A quick rundown on me: Been coding C,C++,Java, Delphi and 68000 for around 15 years; a big whack of that is commercial experience. I currently work for the Advanced Applications Department of Siemens Molecular Imaging (Great dept name, eh?). I've owned a GP32 for around a year and have been looking for an excuse to write something for it for a while; I don't really have the time to write a game from scratch, but I think I might have the time to help you out. I don't have any GP32 specific knowledge; but, I have used the SDL library and written some (rubbish) games in 68000 on the Amiga.

Get in touch if you are interested.

Cheers, Steve.

Hi !
Firstly, sorry for my grammatical faults, I'm french...

Sorry, I'm not able to help you, but I have 2 questions :
-will Sam&Max run better when we hit rats ?
-can you tell me approximately when will the new version of scummVM will be released ?

Thanks !!!

Hi Lagagaffe,

Thanks for your comments.

In response to your questions I don't know and I could not say ;). I have been caught out before by suggesting something may be possible and/or when only to either not deliver or face strong criticism for it not being what was expected. Real life can really get in the way of code time.

A new version of ScummVM will materialise when it is done and it will be a very different program to the older 0.5.1 and 0.3.1 ports with a different codebase so old bugs may or may not exist (most lightly whole new bugs) ;). I am taking a slightly different approach to game support with this revised port and Scumm engine support may not be top on the list, I have not decided yet. I have some other things in mind 1st.

Thanks,

John

Thank you very much for your complete answer; and thank you so much for GPScumm, because it was the main reason why I bought a GP32 one year ago ! :)
I really hope a new version will come in the future, I'll be patient ! ;)
Thanks !!!

AFAIR the rat problem was a bug in earlier ScummVM versions... so if you use later versions as a base, it SHOULD work without any problems.
