not wasted :D
there were some good mega cd titles.

oh yeah, how's homebrew on the giz looking?

That thing has a fast CPU but with that tiny little screen.... WTF were they thinking ;)

I heard Tiger Telematics is going to release a widescreen Gizmondo to compete with Sony's PSP.... but that would mean only some games would support widescreen while others don't.

Widescreen won't help emulation though. It would only be good for movies. If it had a large 4:3 screen I guess the GP2X would be DOA. But since it doesn't I don't care much for it.

its looking real good at the moment hoping to see some real movement in a week or so :)
Firefly seems to be doing a real good job at the mo :)

From your post at the Giz forums it doesn't seem like you care about the GP2X anyway:

supaimposter-

"Man i hope this happens if it does im canceling my order for a GP2X for sure
Why bother if having the GP2X if the Gizmodo is cracked the trusty Giz is way more powerfull.
This could f**k GP2X sales up and PSP for that matter "

This will fuck up the Giz as well. It is a double edged sword. Yeah you will have HB for it now and alot of pirated warez in the short term but that will certainly kill TT and drive them to bankruptcy. They will abandon the Giz as they rely on software sales to keep them going.

Whatever it still has that small screen. And even at 400 Mhz don't expect N64 emulation on it ;)

it's not THAT bad, but yeah..damn.

anyway, anyone think it'll be possible to swap the lcd of the gp2x for a 3.5" vga resolution one?

I personally dont like the Gizmondos screen but there are other things more dislikable about it so it's really not neccesary to find a reason to pick on it, it'll die out on it's own.

As for screens in regard to the GP2X, Video out means you never have to worry about screen size. :)

Jesus Christay, do you have to say the Gizmondo has a small screen EVERY time it's mentioned?

Yeah, because every time it is mentioned it still has a small screen. :p

Homebrew on the Giz has just been cracked. Give it a 4" widescreen display and with the power it's got under it's bonnet, it's a much much sexier beast than it was at launch.

There're two games I'd play megaCD emulators for : Sonic CD (of course) and Switch. I've always wanted to play Switch but the action replay cart I had wouldn't allow me to play it (damn sega, upgrading their region protection!). I seem to Remember the Mega CD have a couple of decent shooters and a quasi-3D chopper game which was quite fun (thunderhawk?)

Widescreen won't do anything for emus though. If it had a 4" 4:3 it would crush the GP2X with the fast CPU.

i doubt it would 'crush' the gp2x when it comes to 2D emulation, although psx emulation would be a different matter.

Well it IS double the CPU speed. It is much easier to port to a system with one fast CPU than trying to get code to run on two slower cores and have them synced up etc. We still don't know what bottlenecks there will be with the GP2X dual core setup. It could be impossible to use them efficiently for emus and it may very well end up that they run only slightly faster than a GP32, no one knows yet. With a 400 MHz CPU you know for sure that everything will benefit from the fast CPU. If only it didn't have a GBA sized screen, it would pwn ;)

Yeah its such a well powered machine.. I think my dream gp2x would have been a gizmondo hardware with the gp2x's screen/design. But i wouldn't remain so negative about dual cores. As a hobby programmer the idea of learning how to write for dual cores is particularly interesting and i imagine alot of devs will feel the same way. I mean they have to start getting used to many cores at some point as amd/intel are heading directly for that kind of setup. I'd hope it may even attract dev's who are looking for a technical challenge of coding for two cores and want to see what advantages could be had by having the two cores over the one at the same speed. I guess initially there is a boost in cache and usually this has real world performance boosts but the sharing of memory bus may mean the extra cache never really affects the speed. I guess its all in the hands of the really nifty dev's but i'm obvously biased to gamepark i just cant get enough of their open source loving : | (well close to open source as can be) and low prices.....
I'm also particularly positive about getting the gp2x as my gp32 is non back lit and doesn't like overclocking much with the rechargeables i have. I'm only really looking for snes over what the gp32 currently has and probably neo geo cd thanks to sd card capacities.

Well it looks like there is bad news about the "open source" nature of the GP2X. It seems like the SoC they chose is completely closed. This means no hardware hacking can be done as you must sign NDA and you would have to use their linux SDL stuff. That really sucks and will limit what can be done/optimised.

omg : | this must be the most ridiculous move i take back what i've said about open source... but as usual the dev's, squide and mirko are willing to write their own low level sdk's/libraries (through signing an nda) so i still wouldn't say it writes off the gp2x for emulation just the one low level library needs to be written and that should eliminate the whole problem. And secondly for someone like me the idea that a completely finished sdl and linux kernel will ship is a complete dream. I could never really code anything to take advantage of the gp32's 133mhz i dont think homebrew ever really pushed its power as there was no need only in 16 bit emulation did low level need to be used. A big issue initially with the gp32 was its poor dev kit and the asociated crackly sound and strange flickering that it put onto the screen. And in no way do alot of people have to go and sign the nda as for the most part dev's should be able to get sdl to do what they need and in the future just use the low level libraries of squide and mirko.
I believe this is all stemmed from the idea that they wanted to get the gp2x out quickly having to write kernels and firmwares would have added months and months to the release date getting a chip from this company with a kernel completely finished and a full sdk will have really speeded things up...

The one console not talked about on the "lesser known consoles" list is the x86. For me, that would be the holy grail. Would VGA games be possible, or is that just an impossible pipe dream?

P.S. Hmm, so the Gizmondo now has a 320x240 screen. Not bad. ;)
