The gp32 has far exceded what i thought it would do when i first got it. Infact things have recently started being released really quickly. But i think the next mile stone is the genesis as it is the console. The only console i went to other people's houses 2 play ( i was a pc person really .) I was just wondering if anyone knew anything of how playable things like fgen will be. Is the gp32 really powerful enough.... And whats all this stuff abotu linux can linux really run from something like a smc :/ . I am confoodled. + is fgen the only genesis emulator being worked on??? Does that means there's no competition. The competition was fantastic with the 3 Nes emulators and has led to perfect emulation in my opinion. + now better than orignal sms ( i just love full screen. ) So my real question is which is more powerful snes or genesis. Please say Snes then i can carry in hope of genesis being playable :)

There's apparently more than one being worked on, and they are, from all reports, coming on very well. However, only one (ryleh's) is being actively worked on I think.

Hope it wont be long :D

Sorry to say the genesis is more powerful than the snes so i dont know but we might get full speed n sound at 3 frameskips

It prob can be done better ryleh prob can pull it off.

Are you sure? I know the Snes was technically only 8-bit, but it had custom chips and routines coming out of its ears. Sprite scaling/rotation, mode 7 and approx 32,678 colour palette displaying upto 256 on screen and an incredible sound system for its age.

The Megadrive (Which I love more), had a fraction of its power I beleive, no scaling etc (apart from if it was written in software), and a weedy pallette and ran on a 68000 processor.

here are some links to techcy stuff.SNES
Megadrive/Genesis

Disclaimer: I'm no techie so I may be wrong, in which case "furry muff" :D

No, the SNES was truly 16 bit. You're thinking of the TurboGrafx-16, that was technically 8-bit (though it sported a color pallete far superior to that of the Genesis)

Snes had a 3Mhz CPU. Genesis had a 7Mhz CPU. While it seems strange, that difference is what allowed for games like Sonic the Hedgehog to move as fast as they did.

The "inferiority" came from the paltry 64 color palette. Nevertheless, it was the more powerful of the two machines.

Hmmm..... I don't think the MHZ of the processor tells the whole story.

The SNES had a better graphics, lots of graphic FX and extra chips that made it more powerful overall than the Genesis when all is taken into account. Also, the SNES and Genesis did not have the same model of processor, so it's a bit simplistic to go purely by MHz. I'll bet that if the SNES can be emulated, the Genesis won't be too hard.

Hmm... I've been in the emulator business since about 1992...
So I remember the first emulators running on the PCs (and also on other systems, like PS2, DC or GP32 :)

I remember that I had a playable Genesis emulator (Genecyst, some may remember) on my 486. At the same time, the best SNES emulator ran about 3 fps...
The Genesis emulators on the PC had always been faster than the SNES emulators.
Nowadays nobody realizes that, because the PC hardware is fast enough to run both at fullspeed.

Now, let's look on the DC or PS2:
Both system have an SNES and a Genesis emulator.
And on both systems the SNES emulator is nearly unplayable with sound (still very impressive), but the Genesis emulator is mostly playable (some hangs here and there, but playable).

So in my opinion it can't be that the Genesis is the more powerful system.
You can't compare MHz - the Amiga ran games like Turrican fullspeed with 7 Mhz, whereas the PC needs for the same game at least 40 MHz.

I guess the SNES had more powerful custom chips compared to the Genesis...

I wasnt going by the speed of the mhz in each cpu in both systems i was going by all the chips etc.

Im not saying its impossible but im just going by what i remember i had fullspeed snes emu on my 486 b4 i ever got genesis on it but that could be because the source code of the genesis hardware was available. Snes had custom chips that would take alot longer to workout.

Dont forget both systems have a dedicated video chip and the genesis uses a z80 for sound so the genesis could be made fast cause of the great z80 source code around from the other emulators.

But im sure we can get full speed for both systems i was just saying from my stand point.

But im sure i can be wrong :D

I always thought that the snes was more powerful. I think we'll get a perfect genesis emulator very eaisly compared to a snes one. The snes has games that I believe could never run on the genesis: Star Ocean, Tactics Ogre, Star Fox, Donkey Kong Country Games, Mario RPG, Secret of Mana 2 (Seiken Densetsu 3), Street Fighter Alpha 2...

Well dk could they just used pre rendered 3d images for that game but starfox no that used EXTRA chips in the cart without the chip snes wouldnt of been able 2 do it.

the genesis could of done it if it had its own chip.

Still the genesis will be easy to do more so than the snes cause the source code of the chips inside it are available cause there not custom chips
