Gp2x Review

i like the buttons as they are in this review!!
sure the volume button looks a little bent, but i don't see the "cheapness".

anyway, this silver/grey button color they have going now is a lot better to me.

Craig, prehaps a more official button poll might be in order? Personally I dont mind the gray, I can kinda understand why they did it (better visibility) though the black buttons made it look "different".

Maybe if we could have it somewhere inbetween?

also maybe a vote for "screw the buttons give us a concave control stick" just for the sake of seeing if there's enough interest.

I agree about the stick needing to be concave. Ones like in the picture above and on dreamcast joypads etc are awful, your thumb slides off them half the time. It needs a concave one like on xbox sticks. Colour of the buttons are irrelevant, grey looks a bit bland but the lack of decent thumb stick is a bigger issue to me

Quick servey at you all want the buttons black?

YES!

The all black looks much cooler than two tone IMO.

PLEASE ALL BLACK!!! BLACK BLACK BLACK I SAY!!!

And I hope they read this:

A lot of people seem to agree with me on this. I think it's still early enough to make this minor change to the thumb pad. Maybe?

I've had this edit on the back burner since the original '95%' pic was released. Interesting to see GPH thinking alike (note my version has extra 'bling factor' across the top, though).

I'd trade the silver accents for a concave stick, but I also figure that recoloring parts is more feasible than reshaping at the ~99% design phase...

This really needs to go to an official poll topic if there's time, though.

If you want concave - go to the GP2X.com support forum and request it. I have done so, and the more people who do so the better.

It might still be early enough to get that changed - afterall they just need to make an indentation on the existing thumbpad and it's done.

I think the grey on black looks terrible where as the all black look has a kind of sleekness to it. And I have never had a problem with slipping with convex control sticks on my ps2 or dreamcast. Maybe you all just have sweaty hands?

Either black or grey not too worried.

As for the stick leave it the way it is. I think it is perfect for tiny little movements so the thumb can hit it from any angle or direction, It's not analogue so my thumb wouldnt be on it all the time just when it needed to be hit.

Think about it. Your thumbs are going to be covering the buttons and the stick most of the time anyway while in use, so you're not going to see the colour, whatever shade of grey it ends up being.

Unless you've used a Zodiac, you don't know how wrong a convex pad is for a handheld. Concave is far superior.

SNK totally innovated handheld controls with their concave digital thumb stick design. GamePark was very smart to copy that brilliant design for the GP32. To lose that superior design for the sake of looks, or due to popular ignorance, would be a true misfortune.

Those of you who really don't have experience with many handhelds should maybe listen to those who have. We're trying to make the GP2X the best it can be, not just good enough.

Convex sucks. I'm going to do a complete DaveC on this matter. In fact I know DaveC agrees so hopefully he'll stop by and add his voice to the subject.

Did you design and manufacture the gp2x joystick?? have you used one?? How do you know that using concave wouldnt be going against the design principles of the the joystick and would make the stick unusable??

Personally I would like to leave the non cosmetic design decisions up to the manufacturer that way if there are any faults it's their fault. Rather than finding out down the line concave is crappy and then complaining only to be told it is what the community asked for.

The zodiac has an analogue stick as does the xbox which is also concave So really they can't be compared at all.

Just my opinions of course...

So what if DaveC agrees with you? I think the guy is a knob always have...

Personally, I don't mind too much about the concave/convex thing. But I must say, if they don't change it, I'll probably try out moving the GP32 stick onto the X2... I imagine the X2 stick will be similarly detachable, after all :)

On that note, I'd probably slightly prefer grey versus black, but whereas the stick for me is a minor issue, the button colour really isn't even that imo. But that's just me.

There isnt anything wrong with having the stick be concave. The DC, Game cube and PS2 all have convex sticks and each one has a higher rate of grip loss than the GP32's stick with the depression for your thumb.

Grab a Game cube controller and test it. If you press a convex stick in one direction for a long period of time (as you;re likly to do with a 2D game) your thumb slowly begins to slip off the center forcing you to re-adjust your thumb to maintain accurate control. That's the point.
