Best Vertical Shooters

Shooters I realy like:

Pulstar (NEO GEO)
Blazing Star (NEO GEO)
Ikaruga (Dreamcast)
R-Type (Arcade)
Darius Twin (SNES)
Gradius Advance (GBA)
Border Down (Dreamcast)
Stargunner (PC x86)
and of course "-All your ship are belong to us." (Mega Drive)

NEO GEO emulator for the GP2X is a wet dream, I hope it comes true. But if I get SNES
that would be more that worth my while.

Ikaruga

Is a really impressive and dificult shooter, there are some videos floating on P2P with a perfect game with only one ship on hard level, amazing stuff... pure hardcore gaming.

Radiant Silvergun for Sega Saturn

From the some creators of Ikaruga. Never played it, but I read that it had some very clever combo system just like virtua fighter, tekken. Some players name it as the best shooter ever.

Raystorm, and the sequel Raycrisis for PSX

MAME runs a lot of good arcade shooters, PCEngine also

and the beloved

GALAXIANS

The first color videogame, pure gameplay, endless hardcore chalenge

space megaforce/ super aleste -- my favorite top-down shooter, it's a snes game. runs pretty well on GP32 (not perfect though but still very very fun)

it's very obviously a decendant to the also enjoyable gunhed/blazing lazers (which locks up shortly into play on GPengine, and is the one reason i'd love to see another PCE emu, but not happening so screw it.. hahaha)

Xevious - early 80's shooter from Namco. Cool arcade shooter.

Salamander - has two horizontal and two vertical levels. Found on most 80's systems, C64, Speccy etc. I played the C64 version.

Salamander, what an incredible game for the c64. And I had almost forgotten that it has vertical play as well as horizontal :)

I've played Space Invaders, thats the one with the aliens, that's so scary!
Beep... beep... beep...beep...beep..beep.beep.beep.beep.beep.BEEP.BEEP.BEEEEEEEEP. And they've reached the bottom. The beeps getting faster really freaked me out. Screw realistic graphics to scare me.

Huh? Huh? You're telling me it didn't freak you out even for one second? And I run on the same beat as anyone here.

I always loved Slapshot - cracking shooter........got addicted to the speccy version, then transferred to the arcade version via MAME :)

Also 1942, Raiden and Flying Shark (rock hard!)

Still can't understand the adulation that Xenon 2 receives - I always thought it was a jerky bag of spanners. Massively over-rated.....

All very true - but is was still pants

Mebbes ppl were swayed by the groovy music and forgot how jerky and unresponsive it was. Certainly there were far better shooters out there for the miggy.......

Reminds me of when Amiga Power gave R-Type 2 a fab review and high score - and I rushed out to buy it and discovered a weak, shoddy port that spectacularly failed to match the brilliance of the first game. I'll never forget the part on level 1 where the parallax scrolling kicked in, and the frame rate halved accordingly.
(And don't get me started on the SNES version - Super R-Type was a triumphant demonstration of how not to develop a fast, smooth and accurate shooter and must have put off lots of early SNES adpoters with with its laughable slowdown - did anybody actually play-test the game before it was released?)

Z-out, Battle Squadron, Apidya and Project X showed what could be done on the humble miggy...
