Wi-fi


i dont see a reason to use expensiv sdio cards when we have a usb port that will likely be easier to get working and is way better supported by (open) drivers.

I'm still confused :huh: we have no USB host connector, AFAIK there is no USB host controller chip, can it be emulated by the CPU? Then somone needs to make the appropriate cable to connect either to the EXT. port or convert the mini USB-C connector? Is this possible?

the gp2x can do usbhost, but since its running at 3V and on only 2AA it would be not that great to sett the usb port to powered USB host, since it would really drain power if a device like a HDD for example would be connected.
Still they wont rip out the function of the cpu i think ;) so what we need is to set the gp2x usb port back to host mode and then add the 5V most usb devices need. (since there is a opengp2x project which want to build up a better linux system too it wont be that hard to set it to host mode then i think)
 
there is usb1.1 hostmode buildin yes, the hardware side is as simple as ading a miniusb->female usb adapter (or just female female and use original cable as done at gp32) and wire a 5v source to it(9vblock/4+aa cells and a voltage converter), cant tell about software side but iam sure magiceyes supplys a usb host driver.
 
USB in MMSP2 isn't connected to the outside world. Instead GPH use external USB chip (for USB2.0 support). So don't bother trying to get example USB code for the MMSP2 USB functions - they won't work...
 
The boards some devs have access to don't have working USB, so I guess we'll have to wait until the retail ones come out.

I wouldn't call it stupid though - they just decided they wanted USB2.0 support rather than USB1.1. Whether they'll use the extra speed is unknown yet, but if they support some kind of mass storage device, it could mean that you never need to remove the sd card from your GP2X :)

Actually, if what the GP2X dev wiki says is correct, the chip that does the USB support is the PLX Technology NetChip 2272. This chip gives one a lot of cool things besides USB 2.0 (including USB mass storage device support built into the hardware - hardware-accelerated GPDrive!), but which (unless I'm reading the specs wrong) is also not capable of being a USB host. With a bit of luck the MMSP2 USB 1.1 signals are routed to the EXT port, else I think this idea is dead in the water.

yes for sure.. i really hope we can do it over ext port, or someone will release a tutorial for a mod.
would be really shit if we cant get this working.

this USB thing is really bugging me, the "basic faq" topic seems to be quite optimist about it :
I/O Ports: Headphones, USB (not powered), EXT, DC Power (possibly SDIO in the future) *note* it may be possible to use self-powered USB peripherals with GP2X, i.e. USB hubs & harddrives etc.

USB Peripherals: Since the GP2X's USB host is not powered, to use any peripherals they need to supply their own power. Some examples of peripherals that might work with the GP2X someday are the Apacer Steno Hard Drives and the Cyberpower USB Hubs. Such peripherals operate on their own battery power, so all we need is software to allow the GP2X to interface properly with them. These are NOT guaranteed to work with the GP2X, so don't run out an buy them just yet. But they represent good examples of what might work well with the GP2X in the near future.

seems quite different than what you say, but what is it based on ?

i personally have a great cowon iaudio X5(the best MP3 jukebox if you don't know :D) that has a "self-powered(hub) external HDD" mode, so i really really hope to be able to plug it on the GP2x :p

or my r-driver2 IDE interface (who works on the X5 to my biggest surprise :D)

isn't really any way to know more about it ? or a declaration from GP? or whatever could give us some hope? :ph34r:

There's very little information out there right now, so either of these statements can be wrong. Squidge also says (earlier in this thread) that USB host won't be supported, but then he also says that the dev boards don't have working USB so that could also be incorrect. Guess we'll have to wait and see... only a couple of weeks left until the first complete units hit the review sites!

The only thing I would want out of Wifi for the GP2X would be multi player games. I would rather not use a 320X240 screen for browsing the internet. I have used web browsers on my 480X320 Zodiac and even that is too small. But wireless gaming for the GP2X would be nice, especially since it won't have bluetooth.

Actually, there could be some other neat networking functions for the potential wifi connection. Streaming audio from your PC and transfering files directly to your SD card...but I still maintain that browsing the web would suck :p
 
If we get wifi, we could get games with MMO support :D . Or random online multiple games.

Anyone for a Street tounament. ;)

Syncing the games would be a pain to get working.
 
i think web browsing on the 2x wouldnt be much worse than with the dreamcast, its native res is 320x240 albeit on a larger screen, it woldnt bother me much :)
