I am a very happy user of my gp2x and I am one that doesn't want to whine about things being in beta stage but just now something staggerin happened. I was trying another headset because mine wouldn't work (they would have sound but the sound to the speakers would not cut out) and lo and behold, the entire earplug thing disappeared into my gp2x !!!!!!!! Leaving a hole - which luckily can be covered with the rubber plug. ;)

So I was left with a ratteling gp2x that could possibly short out or have the earplug thing wedged somewhere not very nice, so I actually had to open my gp2x and get it out:

Well my gp2x is in normal working order again as I managed to put it together in working order, BUT will I miss the non-existent earplug in the future? When I hook it up to the telly in order to have my divx playback? Is there also a sound connector on the video out ?

Can or should I return the gp2x? I am not good at soldering, in fact this will only become a mess and there's probably no way in HELL, CraigX is going to take this one back.... or will you Craig? That guy is just superbusy packing and shipping so other users can have theirs....

I notice that there appears to be 4 connectors on that socket.

I am not sure, but it is possible that the reason your speakers didn't cut out is that the fourth connector, the one closest to the plug end, needs to be grounded.

I theorize that the ground supplied through the earphone plug is supposed to go back into the unit and clue the software into the fact that it should disconnect the speakers.

That is most likely the reason your speakers wouldn't shut down, a faulty connection to the signal wire.

Really, you shouldn't have opened the case but sent it back once it became faulty. It could now be said that you have voided your warrantee as you have opened the case. However, I don't think Craig will complain as long as you didn't break any of the plastic or loose any screws that hold it together.

Happened to a guy I know too. he e-mailed someone at gbax I think and they'll take it back. Just e-mail them.

I know! but I was afraid of more damage inside the machine so I OPENED the case to remove the part to prevent it shorting out anything, since there are metal parts on it. Now I've put the case back together and it is working like it was before, no extra damage has been done to any other part and no parts are missing. Opening the case is something that I probably shouldn't have

I can perfectly understand if he doesn't feel like exchanging it. I've sent him and Jackquelyn an email explaining the situation. I'll just await their reply.

There are 4 connectors on the socket all of them have solder on it so all have been connected in some fashion to the motherboard.

When the plug was still 'in-situ' I did have sound from both earphone parts - well I used Frodo so I couldn't tell if it was true stereo. But I figured something to that effect aswell.

I guess my plug was a manufacturing fault... :(

Great machine otherwise though!

Meh, if that happens on my unit I will find someone who's handy at soldering and enlist their assistance. While I think headphones are necessary with handhelds (some do, some don't), I would not contemplate sending a unit back for a replacement just to take care of that.

Also, are you sure it would be a four-section socket? I understand those are terribly unusual, even in Asia...

Waitaminute, Video WTF? Nobody sends video over a 1/4" connection, do they?

They sure do send video over them. I have seen it on many camcorders, portable DVD/Video CD players, and even some of the new SD mpeg4 recorders, like this one neuros recorder

In fact, I don't want to alarm you, but there is even Optical digital through the headphones style ports/plugs.

The center is hollow and there is a LED at the end transmitting through.

Standard equipment with many digital camcorders.

I have a broken CD player a friend gave to me, and the green Sony socket has a place for the Video out, but no contacts, I can't tell from the pictures, but it appears to be similar in construction to the one supplied with the GP2X, that is why I would like a mod to plug one of these cords in to get our tv-out

ha, i knew that there are bad solder points, thats also a explainations why some people get so short battery live.
Iam sure craigix will be able to fix that unit by himself and send it back to you, soldering that little bitch back in takes like 5 minutes.
