Odd priorites in the GP32 emu scene

Hi...

Maybe im the only one, but isnt a tad odd how we get developers creating ever more additional emulators for the same platforms (NES, SMS, PCEngine, Wonderswan, ZX Spectrum) when adequate ones exist already and yet other platforms such as the Atari Lynx, Amstrad CPC and the Mega Drive aren't emulated or are emulated poorly.

Im not taking anything away from the guys wishing to emulate a system perfectly but wouldnt it be more beneficial for the community to broaden their horizons?

i was with you on the same stance..
but then I thought .. "ah hell.. practice makes perfect.. surely with more coders developing their chops as they race to develop the perfect emu for this system or that one, then eventually the other systems will be easier for them to tackle when (if!) they get to them"

That being said, I am with you 100% on seeing development of emulators for the mentioned systems.. but if they're going to languish in low-speed/choppy playability, then I'd just rather wait awhile as the people that would develop them become more accelerated in their abilities. And the fact that we get better emulators for the systems that they ARE actively working on, is a wonderful trade-off inthe meantime!! (remember when NES emulation was annoyingly buggy, across the board?)

patience grasshopper....

im' not sure but i'm guessing alot of the time a genesis emulator isn't attempted purely because of difficult people have to start off on a simpler system when it comes to emulatoing because from my limited coding knowledge i wouldn't know where to begin writing an emulator seems a bit crazy 2 me

GBC...another one i forgot to mention!

Still Ralp, you have a point. Patience is a virtue. I guess perhaps it possible CPC, GBC and Lynx emulation will be done eventually when the others reach their development peak.

But Mega Drive emulation i wont hold my breath for. What is the issue? I gather theres no decent portable emulator source out there? Id rather see a piss poor quick port than none.

Still...patience indeed.

Ha, but he won't be able to emulate me!
(although I'd really appreciate it... I could send my emulation to work and play RPGs all day :)

at first when i heard about GBC emulation i thought it wasnt that great of a thing to port over.. but.. the more i think about it.. it starts to become a better idea. the two Zelda's I never beat would be welcome :)

Is there an AmstradCPC emu beeing developed? I never used or owned one of these computers so I'm very curious about it. I was an MSX Junkie :) (and still is I guess)

Someone mentioned a CPC emulator a while back. To be honest, I owned one and I think the main problem would be the multitude of screen modes the thing used.

And I've seen people on the boards complaining of quick ports, saying that the authors should hold out and finish it when it's done.

There's just no pleasing everybody.

Also, remember that just because you aren't getting news on emulators doesn't mean they aren't in development. The Genesis/Mega Drive has three emulator attempts not including thecounter's. The Lynx emulation isn't terrible. GPVGB is an extremely good emulator that has no real flaws for me.

As far as I know there is only one active emulator for the SMS, PCengine, and Wonderswan. So you are only attacking NES and Spectrum emulators... and I would suggest that the competition is healthy. For example YoyoFR coded a NES emu and then got experience needed to code other emulators.

Remember that the nice people who develop emus and PD apps, games do this for free. So be nice to them :) And as mentioned earlier, porting and coding new emus is a learning experience so the more projects that are beeing in development the more knowledge will be accumulated. :D

Oh, so the CPC used alot modes, but did it do this in games also? The MSX2 computer also had a load of weird modes, ( I wonder how the emu handles these, gotta try that), but not many games used these. But some games switched resolution on a certain scanline to be able to have the gamearea in lowres and the menus in Hires :) neat trick!

CPC has 3 modes:

Mode 0: 160x200 + borders
Mode 1: 320x200 + borders
Mode 2: 640x200 + borders

and AFAIK no games used Mode 2.

An Amstrad CPC emu is the only emu I need/want for the GP32. Who wants Megadrive/Snes/Lynx emus when you can play La Abadía del Crimen or Abu Sinbel Profanation with the GP32? :D

They work fairly well on GPVGB, I've almost finished one of the zelda games on it.
