The Ur-quan Masters

Probably a daft question - do I need Star Control 2 ROm files as well as the content files?

Yes, that's a totally stupid question and you deserve to be flayed by a hungry Ur-Quan just for thinking it

Errrr... what I meant to say was: No. No you don't need any kind of rom file.

Happy to help :)

Whee, UQM, portable UQM is one of the every increasing reasons i want to get my hands on one of these things, that and of course the all mighty emulator!

Set my expectations:
So, I'm thinking of ordering a GP2x in the next week or so, can someone give me a good estimation of how 'Playable' this game is? While I loved Super Melee, I never bothered to play the campaign, which I actually understand to be superlative.
Does it have any save capability? Could I feasibly be playing the game in its entirety, with an occasional bug knocking me back to a previous save?

I've been highly addicted to this game for the last day or so, and the only bugs I've encountered are some random crashing to the GP2X main menu between mode changes (entering/exiting dialog and others). Saving and loading have worked fine. The only non-recoverable errors I've encountered happen when you try to change the name of your captain or ship, since there's no keyboard for typing. :)

Now if I can just teach myself not to jump deep into enemy territory before I'm ready, I'd be making more progress :(

This is an eeeexcellent port of an excellent game!

sounds good!
The GP2X looks set to let me relive some of my favorite games as well as catch great games I happened to miss (looks amorously at Exult port)

No idea what I'm doing wrong here. When I start it the screen goes black, a mouse pointer briefly flashes in the top-left of the screen, then nothing... Power off time.

installation with v0.2-r1 is very simple, extract the game in /games/uqm
create a directory 'packages' in /games/uqm/content
d/l the uqm-0.4.2-content.uqm and drop it in /games/uqm/content/packages (dont extract it, just copy)
run uqm.gpe

well... dont try now because someone found wise to change my content file on archive.gp2x.de :( GRRR
so it wont works because my latest release needs a special content.uqm package
unfortunaltly, i'm at work now and wont be able to u/l the file before tonight.
I'll let you know when its done.

Ah, that'll be it then. I've downloaded and tried uqm-0.4.0-content.uqm and something called uqm-0.4.2-content-0.zip (which didn't work when renamed to uqm-0.4.2-content.uqm either).

Thanks for you efforts loki, I'm sorry it's been messed up like this. :(

You've gotten me re-adicted to uqm, heh heh, (its entertaining enough tell i actually place my order when i feel like i wont brick my unit, i don't mind betatesting or installing firmware, but, installing what seems like betatesting firmware scairs me). My favorite thing to do has always been see how many drednaughts i can trash with a torch...

Has the source of the port been published?

nope, but I didnt change much from origianl sources
i "only" changed gcc to arm-open2x-linux-gcc, some other compile/linking stuffs, but didnt change a single line in .c files.

so i dont think it si really usefull

Ok :p

By the way, I noticed that the following bug in the new version. After you go to Pluto, encounter the Spatsi (or whatever his name is) and convince him to join you the menu does not return. The game does not crash but it is not possible to return to "navigate either" so you cannot continue. Can anyone confirm this? I'll try to recreate this later

Yeah this just happened to me as well.

And top triggers and diagonals for turning would be a gameplay saver on this one! When you get the chance Loki, you'd make this awesome game the ultimate!

I tried to recreate the problem but this time it worked. The only think I did different was that I skipped the conversations (press start). It did crash back into Linux when I approached the first planet of the nearby star system, however this was also incidental.

I've copied the .uqm file in /mnt/sd/games/uqm/content/packages but i only get a black screen. The game log says:

Code:
The Ur-Quan Masters v0.4.2 (compiled Dec 15 2005 18:34:24)
This software comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY;
for details see the included 'COPYING' file.

Warning: There's no 'packages/addons' directory in the 'content' directory;
	'--addon' options are ignored.
Initializing Pure-SDL graphics.
SDL driver used: fbcon

The names of the joysticks are:

Initializing mixer.
Mixer initialized.
Initializing sound decoders.
Sound decoders initialized.
Warning: Can't open 'starcon.lst'
Kernel failed to load!

Any ideas on what may be going wrong and how to solve this? I checked and there's no starcon.lst file anywhere in the game zip or the content.uqm. I haven't tried unzipping the content.uqm file, it's got more than 10k files and it seems it would take hours.. :S

Thanks!

you can try, i dont have enough free space on my SD, to test it myself, but UQM is compiled with zip and ogg support
instead of unzipping the uqm-0.4.0-content.uqm in the content subdir, just copy this file in content/packages and keep the file 'version' in the content subdirectory
then copy the the voice packages in content/packages subdir. (if it doesnt work, you can still try to uncompress the voice package in the content subdir)

Yes.. I have the version file extracted from the content.uqm in /mnt/sd/games/uqm/content

I also tried renaming the content file as content.uqm, content.zip and uqm-0.4.0-content.uqm . I always get the log I posted.
