I am thinking about the new GP2X but I want first to know if it has wiped out the shitty stuff I don't like from GP32. Are these sucky GP32 things missing from the new GP2X?

1) Most important. Is the sound bug missing?! I've just encountered it and I have to make my 3d engine slower or recode some parts in a diferrent way to not hear sound crackles. Ugh! I hope this bug is not on GP2X anymore. I guess they probably took care of such ugly stuff this time..

2) Is the videoram still vertical? I would prefer a horizontal linear scanline videoram as on the PC and other platforms. But it's not a big problem..

3) How is the stick? In my GP32, I can hardly move it to point diagonial moves, it's hard to play emulator games like contra, you can't make easilly some upper diagonial moves :(

4) DivX? Are there still problems where you have to convert to a very specific video format in order to see a fuckin video on the GP2X? On my GP32, I still haven't managed to run a single video file with any player availiable :p

5) Is the SMC reading/writting still so slow?

6) Anything else that sucks in the new GP2X???

1) yes, its gone

2) its the right way up this time and there is still an 8 bit mode

3) stick detects diagonals too well if anything

4) no, it has mplayer built in

5) it is SD

6) i dunno, but i don't think its a system you would like, i think you should get a psp.

Reverse psychology, eh? :p

You could get quite a fair range of Xvid/DivX formats and settings working with the GP32.. the limit here was simply lack of horsepower (not to mention storage capacity) for full video playback. Not really what I would call a "problem".. that's just the specs... it was never intended as a video jukebox.

As for the GP2X, the joystick's tendency to turn a near-perfect right or left into an upper diagonal is truly frustrating (I pray there is a general firmware fix for this in the wings.. if the stick has 12 switches like I've read, it should be possible to alter the range of what constitutes left and right).

Other than that though, I think it's damn near perfect... they made every improvement I wished the GP32 had plus extra, and the software community seems to be positively exploding for it.

Don't get a PSP, get a DS.

Nintendo makes the best gaming devices, hands down, and the DS is just another shining example

Everyone should try the DS whether they have a GP32/GP2X or not. Haven't been so impressed with a bit of kit for years. Doesn't mean I'm not looking forward to my GP2X arriving though.

Only thing is that movies are *sometimes* a tadge on the unstable side if they're just put straight on a card - and re-coded ones are *sometimes* more stable. But I've quite happily dumped an episode of Scrapped Princess onto a card with no re-coding and watched it with no problems.

Others have had problems - so just warning you you may experience them.

Other shoddy bits? Well, there's the issue of self-bricking GP2xes on low battery (although I remember being told that sometimes these weren't bricked, but simply taking a long time to perform an operation that they presumably shouldn't have had to that's built into Linux), difficulties in upgrading firmware, and *slightly* lower battery life than expected (although still perfectly good imo). Oh, and a 20 second startup, but you get used to that very quickly (surprisingly so).

I'd still, however, say it's a bloody good machine. Whether it's right for you? Well, depends what you want it for, but for me it's cool :)

i love my 2x but if you have no patiencew for that kind of thing go with a DS the ds is great and i plan on getting one once i get a job, my 2x wil get used more i think

Offtopic: Have you watched Off Centre...? :)

Heh, common. I don't care about the PSP since it's too trendy, DS is interesting but I am currently a fan of the GP32 developer scene and as a developer I am seriously thinking about the GP2X. Sorry for the harsh words about the GP32 but some things like the sound bug annoyed me a lot.. :p

Like all of you never have complained about something with the gp32 or gp2x...

I'm going to laugh so hard if someone says "no". XD

I don't there's ever been anything in the existence of Humankind that we have not complained about...
WATER IS TOO WET!

MY FOOD DOESN'T DIGEST FAST ENOUGH!

GOD CURSED ME WITH A PINKIE! WHY DIDN'T HE JUST KILL ME ON THE SPOT!?

Heh :p
I guess I am holding the GP2X in my hands sooner than I thought!
I met another guy around my place who offered to lend me his GP2X soon B)

I guess I'll still try to finish my GP32 demo till Spring 2006 and in the meanwhile porting my 3d engine for the GP2X. Yey!

Something tells me he's a developer (a good one, if he got 3D working on the GP32), might want to hold back on the 'get a PSP/DS' comments ;)
