If you're like me and know a little bit of Java, check out this link for a good conversion guide to C/C++:

G5BCFJ – C/C++ for Java Programmers

It's the web page for a course at Nottingham Uni with all the lecture notes available online. They're very readable on their own and being lecture notes means you don't suffer from the typical information overload that can hit you when starting out.

Hey thanks very much mate! Personally, this is very helpful to me since I've been taught Java for 4 years at uni (and soon finishing my degree) I wanted to expand to C, and this seems like a good start. And hey, I might even consider taking the course :)

gothakane: you never had to do anything in C/C++ at uni ?!

Its usually all Java now at uni :(
Whoever came up with that little chestnut obviously never worked in the actual industry.

Oh well, at least Java teaches you good OO practice.

all java now? Granted, the first 3 programming courses were java at my uni, but after that we used all sorts of different languages.

So far, I've been taught Java and a small amount of Haskell on the computing science course at Newcastle and that's it (half way through second year now). I would have preferred to be taught a platform specific language like C++ 'cause it forces you to have a better understanding of the underlying hardware you're programming for. Obviously that makes it more difficult to teach and learn though, so I can see why the universities have made the switch.

Sorry, should have said all Java, or Java with a little extra from a strange / obscure language. I agree with using an unusual language, but the focus on Java is way too heavy imo.
