the first edition was supposed to be filled with bugs or something like that. can't wait for it to get here. B)

seriously, the hardware's pretty much in stone. if lik sang is actually waiting for something, it's the magical firmware version that we're all keen on loading.

Mine's not a "first edition" so I suppose you could call it the second one...
I threw a picture of it in the other "first edition" post if you'd like to confirm the absence of the words "first edition" on it :p

Wow, good for you. Now realise Lik Sang are full of shit nd youre getting the same model that we've already got ¬_¬

well lik-sang claims that the first editions are really buggy with these issues:

• Practically many videos are not playable without capping them.
• There are reports of Xvid playing too fast, and DivX sound not in sync with video.
• There is a battery problem, 2 hours battery-life with standard batteries only.
• There is no power supply or charger included with the GP2X.
• Stereo jack sinks on some units, because of poor soldering.
• The speakers are mono instead of stereo.
• Headphone channels are switched, left is not left.
• The action buttons are too small. Your thumb can cover all four.
• There is a large joystick deadzone (that can be fixed with a "mod" according to a distributor).
• Uneven color distribution on the screen and other LCD problems.
• Long boot time (28 seconds).
• Compatibility problems with some brands, types or sizes of Flash Cards.
• USB Connection and incompatibility problems with Windows XP (apparently fixed with latest Firmware).

that's why i decided to wait until the second edition was shipped to lik-sang. and besides, the gp2x second edition is the same price as the first edition anyways.

if they're waiting for a new button layout and shorter boot time, you'll get your unit in about 5 years.

these are all discussed at length in this forum and most will eventually be fixed with firmware. Mid next month seems to be the best guess on new firmware. But I've never heard (outside lik-sang) mention of a vastly different unit from what we're getting.

I'm not sure what it's going to take to assure you that your retailer isn't being honest with you. The 'second editions' are out (at least the non-'first editions' are) and aside from shipping with a current firmware (vs. upgrading), the differences are minor at best. the biggest difference is the paintjob. lik-sang's reasons for not having them in stock are their own.

You might as well cancel your order, get your money back, and find a cheap hooker. You have plenty of time to save up for a GP2X again by the time Lik-Sang stocks it.

• Practically many videos are not playable without capping them.[fixed]
• There are reports of Xvid playing too fast, and DivX sound not in sync with video.[fixed]
• There is a battery problem, 2 hours battery-life with standard batteries only.[fixed - just dont use crappy alcaline]
• There is no power supply or charger included with the GP2X.[adapter can be picked up anywhere/keeps costs down]
• Stereo jack sinks on some units, because of poor soldering.[fixed-first edition only]
• The speakers are mono instead of stereo.[fixed]
• Headphone channels are switched, left is not left.[fixed]
• The action buttons are too small. Your thumb can cover all four.[bull! and I have big fingers!]
• There is a large joystick deadzone (that can be fixed with a "mod" according to a distributor).[cant/wont be fixed since its nothing that can be altered except with the hardware mod suggested - deadzone is exagerated anyway]
• Uneven color distribution on the screen and other LCD problems.[fixed]
• Long boot time (28 seconds).[will be fixed, not a big issue]
• Compatibility problems with some brands, types or sizes of Flash Cards.[fixed]
• USB Connection and incompatibility problems with Windows XP (apparently fixed with latest Firmware).
Issues were mostly all first run problems. The edition get you get from LS will be the same as are being sent out now. The *only* change might (and its a big might) be an alternate joystick cap, which will cost you about a pound if they do make one :p

I had two minor hardware issues. My gp2x has headphone socket to deep inside so it barely connects in stereo (can be fixed by using appropriate jack) and the stick wasn't reliable until I'm opened the gp2x and putted everything back in a place. These are minor and for sure the next units (not "first edition") should be free of them.

The much worse are software issues with troublesome upgrading of firmware in the first place. I bricked my gp2x already and the process should be both easier and error proof.

There will not be any major changes to the gp2x. Perhaps a new model in the future but unless we are talking about jump similar to gp32->gp2x then changes will not be significant.

Well done for waiting, you must have the patience of a saint. :D

The changes have been firmware related and one cosmetic one relating to the power and battery indicator, oh and you don't get the words "first edition" on the case. Some people like the joystick and some don't but that's been the case with every handheld and console I've known. You can't please all of the people etc..

What LikSang claimed to be the reason for starting with the "official edition", which will be released early next year, is that they're afraid of getting all "first edition"-units sent back (which happened with the early GP32s as well...). If anyone has gotten an earlier edition, than the official, from LikSang; just send it BACK!

• Practically many videos are not playable without capping them. - Nope.
• There are reports of Xvid playing too fast, and DivX sound not in sync with video. - Fixed, mostly (firmware bug)
• There is a battery problem, 2 hours battery-life with standard batteries only. - Improving (firmware)
• There is no power supply or charger included with the GP2X. - Never will be
• Stereo jack sinks on some units, because of poor soldering. - Mine's great
• The speakers are mono instead of stereo. - There's a patch
• Headphone channels are switched, left is not left. - Firmware
• The action buttons are too small. Your thumb can cover all four. - Won't change, and the buttons are fine for me
• There is a large joystick deadzone (that can be fixed with a "mod" according to a distributor). - You can get replacement joysticks, or do the mod
• Uneven color distribution on the screen and other LCD problems. - Firmware, fixable
• Long boot time (28 seconds). - Firmware
• Compatibility problems with some brands, types or sizes of Flash Cards. - Firmware
• USB Connection and incompatibility problems with Windows XP (apparently fixed with latest Firmware). - Firmware

there never will be a power supplyr or charger inside the 2X box, but sure, a retailer might bundle it with some and charge a bit extra (or less?)

I would like to know if they are gonna do anything about the joystick as well. I thought I read on here somewhere that they were gonna change the cap or something to do with hardware. Can someone confirm this?
