After reading around on the forums I'm almost scared to try putting my SD card into my GP2X. So I was wondering if someone could give an exact summary of what to do to ensure your SD card is ready for your GP2X.

I believe a card will either work or not work. It will only run a firmware update if you've put the firmware update files on the card. Don't let all the panicking put you off, it's not nearly that bad.

Take card, put in card reader, format to FAT32. Do not put a non-formatted card in your GP2X, it may brick it. For some reason the GP2X sees an unformated SD card as the perfect thing to try and update a non existant firmware from.

Good Luck.

Do I have the right card? I have a PEAK Flash Card (also called a MultiMedia Card on package). It is 1 GB and is the size of a postage stamp. It doesn't actually state anywhere on the package that it is SD. If I have the wrong card then this would obviously explain why my console is not reading it atall.

Amongst many other features (written on the back of the packaging) it says...

"Forward Compatible to Secure Digital (SD) Card Slot"

...which would suggest that it could work instead of an SD card right?

Either way, I guess I have waisted my money (£50) and will have to buy an SD. The website I bought it from had the product listed as an SD, but obviously that was a lie.

Does anyone know a working SD card that I can buy from a website? Preferably within the UK.

I'd also be interested to know if anyone has managed to get a 1 GB MultiMedia Card to function with the GP2X. I'd like to know 'cause if it does work then I don't need to spend out even more money on an SD.

try amazon for that SD card. i haven't tried mine yet but you can get 1gb ones for about £35..

Thanks for the help subin but I really need to know of a trusted SD card. One that definately works with the GP2X.

I read at another forum that someone got a MultiMedia card to work in their GP2X (it was less than 1 GB) so I'm beginning to wonder whether or not to bother spending out on an SD now. I have a feeling that if I do I will encounter the same problems except I will be £35 (or more) poorer.

Thanks for all the help everyone by the way. :)

So I've revisited the German web-shop (which is very supportive - be nice if a British web-shop popped up selling exclusive GP2X gear - I suppose it's early days yet right?) and had a look at the SD Cards available. Thought they might be cheaper at Amazon and came across a problem that I fell for at Big Pockets (where I purchased my MultiMedia Card). The problem (which other newbies may fall for so watch out folks!) is that Amazon calls a particular MultiMedia Card an SD (which is incorrect). Looking at the photos of SD Cards and then comparing them with my MultiMedia Card, they are definately different, but then comparing the differing makes of SD Cards, these are slightly different looking (to each other) also. Either way, the German web-site does not stock any MultiMedia Cards which might well suggest that these type of cards should be avoided (at least until someone can get a 1 GB MultiMedia Card to work in the GB2X - if so then post away and let us know).

you might want to check the sd card topic in general - it's a sticky. a hot sticky at that. it clears up a lot of issues regarding sd cards.

Not true, Make sur that your card is FAT32 format, and ive been told that you should always boot the system with no SD in then put it in when it is booted.

I boot with the card in there all the time, doesn't seem to make a difference to me.

Anyone know why you should not have the SD Card in the console while booting? I would have thought that putting a card in while the GP2X is on would be a bad thing. Same as taking the card out if it is on.

The reason that people put the sd card in AFTER boot up is that sometime your SD card can corrupt, and if you put a corrupted card in your GP2X on boot-up, it will try to load a non existing firmware. This happened to some people who used either an old SD card, or an SD card from a digital camera, or tried formating with digital cameras, or just plain had bad luck and their card corrupted. Either way, non formatted cards and corrupt cards can brick your GP2X. It's up to you to take the risk and boot with your card in or out.

Personally, I always boot with my card in, unless I have just copied over files with my card reader, then I will boot without the card the first time just to be sure everything is intact.

Oh, and if your still wondering about cards, I use a Ridata/Ritek 1gb 66X SD card, available from newegg for $50.

Err... If you're talking about shop.gp2x.de then you do realise that they get their gp2x stock from gp2x.co.uk don't you? That would be gp2x.co.uk the British web shop and the first ever supplier of the gp2x ;)

Didn't know that they got their stock from the UK one. Either way, the German one has accessories etc. but the UK one only has the console itself for sale. I couldn't seem to find a way to buy an SD Card from the UK one (without having to buy another console). The German sells SD's seperately.

reaper 79...

Thanks for the info. I have sent an e-mail to GP2X Sales to find out what they have to say about my MultiMedia Flash Card (whether it is compatible). If they say it's no good then I now know the best SD to get. Thanks.
