I purchased a 2GB SD card off of ebay (HERE) and it just arrived and I can't do anything with it. First of all, although the title said it was "Brand New", it came with no factory sealing (just the card in a small plastic case) and appeared to have been handled (scratches, fingerprints). I put it in my card reader (a SanDisk ImageMate 5 in 1 Reader, SDDR-99) and open it up in windows..... except it isn't formatted. Windows asks me if I would like to format it, and I say yes, as there is no other option and I was planning on doing this anyways just to be safe. I select FAT32 and then start the format. The progress bar reaches the end, it stops for awhile, and then it comes up with a message, "Windows was unable to complete the format". And that's it. It doesn't tell me what the problem is, so I have no way of knowing what is wrong. What should I do? Is it a faulty card, windows, or my card reader? I have tried multiple times and even different formats and it has done the same thing every time.
Please help me,
-ben

Sounds like it could be a bad card. On my flash card reader at work, it formatted my 2 gb card to 1 gb because I guess that's the limit on it. I had to connect my gp2x to my computer and format it through the windows explorer and it took like a half an hour. Strangely enough this computer at work detected it as an external USB drive fine, I was unable to get it to install at home.

Can't really help you in fixing your card. But if you can return heres a card for the same price from a real store ZipZoomFly.

Sounds like a faulty card. If windows does not recognise the card when you insert into the reader, then it's dead. It could've died during format but don't mention that to the seller. See if you can get a refund or exchange. I saw a few days ago a Lexar brand 2GB on amazon for $99 after rebate. Not sure if the offer is still there. I have that Lexar brand and it works great with the GP2X.

Hi grahf,

You said you had a mmc card. Does mmc stand for MultiMedia Card?

Justin.

Additionally, that Ebay advertisement states that at 60x it's the fastest in the world, they're up to 120x or something now

I have a mmc that is 1 GB. Also called a PEAK Flash Card. Would you say that this should work in my GP2X?

My PEAK card is 100X. I guess the 2 GB version might be 120 X or above.

You could have formated it to FAT16 and that would be why it is only 1GB, because that is the limit of FAT16.

A few people have had success with mmcs from what i read, but compatability is not high at this point. Its worth a try, but i wouldnt count on it. MMCs are also slower than SD.

Uh, you shouldn't do normal formats on flashcards.. Quickformat is enough, less wear on the card as well.

deadlychicken22: it could be your card reader, I have a small blue Twinmos usb card reader that refuses to read my 2 GB SD card, works fine in my PCMCIA card reader though. So try a different card reader.

Nah, I verified several times it was FAT32 and also messed around with the block size, it always formatted to 1 gb only.

Well, i sent him a message and he gave me instructions for returning it, so it sounds like I will get a replacement card, hopefully this one will work (and actually be new). Thanks for the suggestions.

Nice to know that my mmc card might work later on. Wasted my money otherwise.
