I Just Got My Gp2x!!!

Make sure you have a decent SD card reader/writer, as the one in the GP2X tends to not work or be very slow.
Ahem, a question here: I have a middle-class Olimpus camera that, naturally, reads/writes to SD cards, and while the camera is connected to my PC, I can freely access files on the card that is inserted into camera, so will it do? Or I'd better buy a dedicated cardreader?

That will work fine. I generally think that it is better to have a dedicated card reader to lessen the extra strain on the camera.

So, do any retail stores like best buy or target sell USB card readers? Or can I only get it online? And if I can only get it online, where online would I get it?

Yes, you can get them at most retail stores like bestbuy or target.

Most of them write to the cards too, I've only seen a few that do not.

Alright, I will be going out to get one today. Thanks for the help. I cant wait till monday when my GP2X arrives.

Just recieved my GP2X (well, picked it up a few hours ago) ordered from gbax/gp2x.co.uk (another satisfied customer).

I really like it, aside from its power requirements (atm I don't have a UK > native power plug or >2400mAh batteries, so I haven't been able to use it for long periods of time). So far, I've tried

DrMDx (various roms)
SquidgeSNES (hack by Reesy)
2xQuake
Duke2X
Gnuboy2x
fishyNES
GNGeo2x
+ some other misc. things

And I've really been satisfied with the performance of (almost) all of it :)
Seems we still lack a good NES emulator though.

Well, I just ordered my GP2X, a PSU and a TV adaptor, plus a 2gb Sandisk card via eBay (£30 inc postage!) and a card reader from eBuyer... Got all the major emus from the archive page and now I'm going to sit back and wait... :D

Thing is - I ordered from GP2X.co.uk and there was no option to select a delivery address - I'm hardly EVER at home to take deliveries and only have Saturday, Sunday or occasionally Mondays off to visit postal depots (and on work days I never get out before 6.30pm, ever). Have emailed the folks over there asking them to deliver it to my work address if they can do that, but I may have to suffer GP2X-less until I can make it to a depot otherwise... There's an awful lot of people here saying they've just 'collected' their machine...

Also, I've ordered on the 5th of May expecting to wait till the 15th and be sent a Mk.2 - this IS the case, right? Don't want a Mk.1 if the Mk.2 is imminent! (it says if you order now then you'll get the new version come the 15th on their site but you never know...)

Cannot WAIT :)

/is off to enjoy the anticipation on the forums...

Oh My! I was reading the above post thinking it was my own post :)
I'm absolutely dying to get my hands on this unit (and again, hopefully the mk2). Except my billing address is my parents house 200 miles away :( I've seen it a few times where companies only like to send to the billing address so I guess we're just going to have to live with that owen-b (unless the company says otherwise, in which case can you mention it please?)

AGH, counting the days now.

YES!!!! MY GP2X came today!! Too bad I have to wait till tuesday when my SD card gets here but still, I can now drool over it until then!

Quick qquestion tho. My system says First Edition on it. And it came with 1.2 firmware. Does that mean its one of the ones prone to screwups? Or do all of them say that?

I emailed gp2x.co.uk and Jacquelyn emailed me back to say that yes, I would be getting the Mk.2, and that she would change the delivery address to my work address which I provided in the email.

YAY! :D

I didnt know that the MKII was coming out when I placed my order at the end of April, saw people who bought one 2 days before I bought mine who have now received theirs, then received an email saying that I would be one of the first to receive the MKII, am well excited.

I would be so gutted if I just bought an old model.

Not really, the old model has much better colors and contrast, the new screens are washed out.

Have you actually got your hands on a Mk2, Dave?

I'd love to see a side by side comparison.. since I'm getting a Mk1 some time soon. Be nice to have some proof that I've made a reasonable decision. ;)

:D My GP2x was just dropped off buy UPS but im stuck at work <_< I think I might have to go home "SICK" ;) ;) I have wanted one since i first saw the gp32 years ago....

Got mine yesterday. Had the GP32 FLU for about a month before deciding to go for this (I actually got my GP32 in a swap for my old Atari Lynx!). I was impressed by the GP32, but the GP2X is AMAZING. I got one of the replacement caps from GP2X.co.uk and it really improves the joystick. Very easy to use, amazing screen, amazing emulation so far (better than on the GP32), although I'm concerned about bricking the thing!!!

I got my GP2X yesterday, but wasn't able to pick up an SD memory card until today. I ordered my GP2X from GamerSection. I found their website confusing when it came to payment options (it's not really made clear until the end of the ordering process), and they didn't send me any tracking info for the shipment until after it had arrived. But all in all, I can't complain much . . . I got it quickly, and at a good price too. (For a short time they dropped the price to $169, and that's when I grabbed it.)

I'd been thinking about buying a GP2X for a while, but wanted to wait until most of the bugs had been ironed out. (More on that, in a sec.) I ended up getting a Mk1 of course, but I'm fine with that. The general opinion seems to be that the screen on the Mk1 is better, overall . . . and that's what matters to me, most.

The unit came with the v1.2 firmware, so I copied the 2.0 firmware files to the 2GB A-Data card I bought, through the card reader I have. I flashed the firmware, and it worked fine. So luckily the GP2X seems to like the memory card.

So then I formatted the card to FAT32 again, and put a bunch of files on it. Music, videos, emus, etc. This was using the card reader. So I finish up, eject the card, put it in the GP2X . . . and the filenames are all corrupted. No matter what I do: the card reader can read back the files fine, but the GP2X sees junk. I've read that this is a common problem.

So next, I try writing to the card while it's in the GP2X, through the USB cable. And . . . XP doesn't recognize the unit, because I've got USB 2.0 ports. So I have to use a USB hub in-between. FINALLY I'm able to write files to the card without them being corrupted, only at a snail's pace. And I just tried playing a video file, but the video and audio were out of sync.

I thought I'd waited long enough for these problems to be fixed, but I guess not. This has put a serious damper on my enthusiasm for the unit. I was so looking forward to using it, but these problems are just annoying as hell. Once they're fixed I'm sure I'll be happy, but how long will it take? The unit has already been out for at least 6 months, and there are still problems. :(

I bought mine from them, as well. Ordered it on a Saturday and received it on the next Friday morning. Pretty good.

I see that they're now out of stock. The sale price must have been really appealing. It's great to see so many people interested in the GP2X. Hopefully this helps fuel the development for it.

Welcome to the group!

My GP2X arrives next week - it'll have the V2 Firmware on it, so do I really need to change my new 2gig SD card to FAT32, or will it run the emus, roms, movies etc from FAT16? The only reason I ask is that I have a Mac and don't want to have to delve into Terminal to do the re-format (although I have access to a PC - is it really easy to do on a PC? What app do I use?)
