Uae4all Amiga Emulator Port To Gp2x

i just discovered a very weird problem/bug...when starting turrican 1@275Mhz (using the included uae4all overclocking) it loads until the titlescreen and crashes the whole gp2x at track 21. but at 266Mhz it works just fine... i have no problems overclocking to 275 Mhz in other programs (finished metal slug 1 at 275 Mhz yesterday)

my turrican-version: Turrican (1990)(Rainbow Arts)[cr TRSi][t +4 ACU]

using the cpu_speed.gpe to overclock to 275 Mhz causes the gp2x to crash at track 22

can anyone confirm this ?

It doesn't sound particularily weird to me. I'm sure you are just pushing the machine to a point where it become unstable, you can get different reactions with different programs depending on what bits of the GP2X are being used. Just drop back down to 266MhZ. Also, try some other games at 275 and see what happens.

I can only run 250 MhZ stable, so count yourself lucky!

P.S. Liking the latest update of UAE a lot! I can't wait for Cyclone :D

hmm, i think you´re right...i thought it´s an uae4all-specific problem. just noticed that a few other games crash too at 275Mhz - most of them don´t.

thanks for your explanation :)

Also the overall framerate seems to have gone down quite a bit.

yep i noticed that too,but you must admit that the compatibility is GREATLY increased....

i hope for the next version to fix both things

Is the compatibility really better? I haven't tried many games yet, but Transplant being one of them which no longer works (crashes ingame), one game that worked fine in all previous versions.

Turrican 1 @ 266 MHZ runs fine but crashed in level 2 near the bunch of hidden extra lives. Couldn't get Supercars 2 to run (crashes after logos)

What kickstarts are you guys using? I can run 1.2 up to 3.1 without problems, even got into my favey tracker program OctaMED and EA's Deluxe Paint 4, ... cool stuff to have on the gp2x!! First one is hard to control tho and with downpitched sound a bit weird ... lol

I ran Supercars 2 yesterday on 0.5.1 with no issues. I haven't tested a game that used to work on a version prior to 0.5.0 that now doesn't, personally, but of course there was quite a bit of change, so there's always the danger. I only ever run kickstart 1.3.

I'm interested about your report that the sound pitch has dropped... I hadn't actually noticed that myself. It would be good to have another GP2X to compare them side-by-side, but failing that, I might record the sound output (using a microphone since the demise of my headphone socket) and compare the two versions. Unless anyone else wants to do it, of course...

w.r.t. Transplant, assuming it's the same game I just tested on 0.5.1 (I used the one from Assassins Collection Disk 038), I completed the first level with no issues. Please could you let me know where it crashed for you, at what clock speed, sound on/off etc.? I ran it at 200MHz, Emu Bias full CPU, no sound.

Hi critical,

thanks for your reply. I'm about to leave for work now but will create a few sound examples for you when I get back. And looks like I should have another go with Transplant and Supercars2, heh ...

in a bit! :)

I've just written this if it's any help. I know you don't need me to describe all the steps, but someone else new to the thing might, and I'll just be able to copy and paste this at that point :)

Steps for adding a compatibility entry
-------------------------------------------

Check whether it has already been added or not here:
http://wiki.gp2x.org/wiki/UAE4all

If not, add it as follows:

* If you don't have a wiki account or haven't logged in yet, create one here:
http://wiki.gp2x.org/index.php?title=Speci...eturnto=UAE4all

* Go to Shane's helper page here:
http://www.gp2x.us/uaeentry.php

* Type the name or part of it into (field 1)

* Select the matching entry (field 2)

* Select the status (field 3)

* Select the version of uae4all you've tested on (field 4)

* Select the emu bias that you tested with (field 5)

* Enter the crack group as may have been shown before the proper game loaded (field 6)

* Add any useful notes like overclocking, frameskip, problems, etc. (field 7)

* Press the "generate the wiki entry" button (field 8)

* This will create some wiki text. Copy this into your clipboard.

* Go back to the uae4all wiki page, using this link:
http://wiki.gp2x.org/index.php?title=UAE4a...=edit&section=6

* Scroll through the existing entries until you find the right place alphabetically to insert your new entry.

* Paste your new entry into place

* Click the "show preview" button at the bottom

* Scroll through the resulting preview page and check that your new entry looks correct.

* If so, scroll to the bottom of the page, and click "Save page"

* Congratulate yourself on helping with the testing effort.

Okay as promised I've prepared a little sound test for you guys that compares the original amiga sound playback with the one currently emulated in uae4all, V0.4.5 and V0.5.1. There's 6 short mp3 files and a detailed explanation TXT in a .rar archive.

GP2XvsAMIGA-soundtest 3.7 MB

If you have any problems or questions please let me know :)

EDIT: FIXED typo in txt file and download link

Just a note: Under the WIKI text my tool generates is a link that takes you RIGHT to the wiki in edit mode (just be sure you're signed in first so you have a session open at the Wiki).

Someday, maybe, we'll move this to a real database that would REALLY make this easy. :)

Critical

Just checked out the latest build and I must say great work!

One little thing that niggles me though is the fact you cant hold the down direction on the stick to quickly move up and down in the menu. Its a bit of a chore having to constantly click down or up when your in quite a long list of adfs just to get to the one you want. I seem to remember an early build having the option to push left and right on the stick in the GUI to skip to the top or bottom (maybe I imagined that, or maybe it was taken out for a good reason).

Like I said, its only a small gripe and maybe something you can add at a later date if other people agree.

Great work, Im lovin this emu :)

Might add that at some point, as long as I can get the sensitivity right.

I took out the pushing left or right to page through directories feature, as I did it too often accidentally. However, I changed it so you can pager through using the L and R buttons instead, which I feel is cleaner.

Hi, I was really looking forward to using this emulator and I have purchased "Amiga Forever" including all the kickstart roms however the 1.3 is only the 256K version and it doesn't work with the gp2x emulator. :(

Is there anywhere I can get the 512K "overdumped" version people are talking about please? I'm happy to pay for it - I just want speedball on my gp2x :D

Ah now, it just occurred to me that there's a simple solution to these issues (apart from me fixing the code to accept 256K ROMs).

The overdumped ROMs are just the first 256K repeated, I think (I haven't actually looked at the files, but I imagine that's the case).

Consequently, you should be able to just do a binary concatenation thus (in Windows):

copy your kick.rom file, and rename the copy to kick1.3-256k1.rom
copy your kick.rom file, and rename the copy to kick1.3-256k2.rom
rename your kick.rom file to kick.bak

copy /B kick1.3-256k1.rom + kick1.3-256k2.rom kick.rom

That should create a 512K kick.rom file that at least has a fighting chance of working. I haven't tested the theory, however, but you seem keen so why not have a play? :)

Good luck

Many thanks critical for your reply. I have tried this and always get the same black screen when I try to either run or reset after I have mounted a disc. I have tried various different adf's and always get the same result so I am assuming it is the kick.rom issue. I have tried all the other settings suggested in the wiki so it looks like it has to be this file at fault :(
