Decided to stop sitting on my latest version of atari800. Lots of 2.0.1 upgrade teething issues fixed. Also:
# Fixed savestates (You can't load 0.9 ones since they were broken, delete them, sorry)
# Added 16-bit HiFi Pokey (Off by default, slow in some programs)
# Config file is now atari800.cfg (not .atari800.cfg) and autogenerates better
# Fixed 5200 controls in default.men
# 5200 digital controls mode
# Improved palette
# Improved timing
# Fixed NTSC sound

Hope you enjoy it.

(how do I add a discuss here entry?)

Thanks Foft. Hope my testing helped :)

Thanks for the great emu.

I see you got the hi-fi pokey working well. Niccceee.

I'm not 100% sure on this but it seems when I load or save a state the emu will hesitate about 20-30 seconds after returning to the atari for about a second then it continues fine.

Working fairly well, but still too slow for some things. I asked on the atari800 development list and they had some suggestions for speeding it up. Spurred the biggest chat I've see there for years! They are talking about replacing this Pokey version with a cycle exact one and stuff...

Anyway I plan to make it fast enough in the next version. Either by trying some of their suggestions or moving it to the 2nd CPU. Having a month off first though:)

Must be some kind of timing issue. I'll see if I can figure it out. Sounds liveable with for this version though, so (unless simple) I'll probably leave it for a few weeks.

Thanks,

Mark

I've had my first experience of this emulator and I must say that I am really impressed.

I did try to find an icon on the internet to use with this emulator but I couldn't find one, so I made my own.

It is my only way of showing my appreciation, nice work foft. :D

Yeah I noticed on some games the hi-fi pokey does not sound very good. But still, it's a step in the righ direction.

Spent a good amount of time last night and this morning playing with it.

Actually it was just one, but I turned off the high fi pokey after that so I wouldn't have to worry about rebooting all the time. It was the intro music for "Electrician". It sounded pretty bad with the hi-fi pokey turned on.

Hmm, that sounds correct to me. It does distort if you run the GP2X at max volume, but thats just GP2X clipping the sound because its too loud! Volumes between the two Pokey sound implementations are not quite the same. All I can do about that is limit the volume a bit more, but I don't think thats the way to go since some things are quieter.

Mark

edit: Oh and the reboot irritates me. I think I'll change it to save/reload state instead which will set up the other Pokey just as well.

The emulator is great, I play with it both on the GP32 and the GP2X. There are only two setbacks I can think of.

Boh GP32 and GP2X suffer minor (World Championship Karate) or major (Barbar Conan) slowdown in some games. Considering the good old Atari 800 is not such a beast, would it be possible to speed it up or better keep the speed same even in more intensive scenes? I have to admit I had never played Barbar Conan on the real Atari (later levels are very slow), but I used to play IK (or WCK) a lot and it was definitely faster (no music slowdown).

The second thing is that some games suffer from a "slipping bug", when the main characted keeps sliding down the screen for no reason (Jet Set Willy, Maxwell Manor) rendering the games almost unplayable.

Other than that, its great to have the Atari in a pocket, thanks for it :)

Conan has always been like that (slow). It just has a poor framerate and few animation frames.

Turn off frame skipping for the games that give you the slipping bug. That oughta fix it, but then you'll have to bump up the clock speed to compensate.

Hey foft.... It'd be really nice if the emulator remembered the name of the last save state. Save me the trouble of redoing the name everytime. ;). I know there are default names but when I'm using a menu disk (which I'm doing now). It's hard to remember which game I was playing on games01 and the ones I'm using require menu.atr to run.

OK so your saying games that maximize the volume will have problems. Ok. I can think of a few that do that. I'll check em out and see.

I been thinking about this more and I think what happens is when I "save" a state the hesitation is caused by a delayed write to the SD card by the GP2X. It only happens when saving a state.

Ok noob type post !

I want to get this Atari 800 emulator to work as i love the games for it. Downloaded a lot of atr games.

Installed the emulator and the directory tree from here...

http://www.scrameta.net/a800.html

But when i load up the Atari 800 what should i do to get a game to work ? One minute it seems to work and then the next minute not

I select Run a Program (top option) and then select a game (when i highlight over a game what key should i press then, A ?)

I've got defender to work but then others i try it then goes to a screen which seems to say i dont have the correct BIOS installed but it must be as i had Defender working.

Can someone help me and tell me the exact sequence to load/change a game etc. I keep getting a yellow screen saying no bios or a blank screen and nothing happening

Weird ! Cheers

Someone please help ! ! Badly want to get this emulator working

Could someone write down the sequence they use to load a game etc

I love this emu and use it all the time :D
I have just got a BOB, and I now have some questions.

1- why does the emu look so bad on a tv output through BOB, only displays on about the top 1/3rd of screen, and can't read any dialogs.

2- any plans to include usb joystick support through the BOB?

thanks
:D
