Should I Have Gotten The Xgp Instead?

So I ordered the GP2X a few days ago and I'm now hearing of the XGP. What the heck? I really don't want to get a system that's gonna stop being supported, or not being supported as strongly because of a better system. Should I return it and shell out for the XGP?

One of the main reasons I got the GP2X was because of SNES emulation - having read a lot of posts I got the feel that the GP2X has the potential for perfect SNES emulation - no? A system with more power, XGP, is guaranteed because it can emulate with more power, thus emulate PS, and even more advanced systems. Not sure though, I'm not certain of the specs.

What does everyone else think? Many thanks!

Xgp is made by Gamepark (NOT holdings).
GP2X is made by Gamepark Holdings, a company which split off of Gamepark recently.

Therefore, the XGP has nothing to do with future support of the GP2X.

The XGP is actually less powerful (supposedly) than the '2X atleast processor-wise.

We're not even sure if the Xgp will come out.

Even if it does it will probably be a failure. Its supposed to be mainly 'commercial'.

It does not have linux...it uses a custom 'OS' instead.

Where'd you get that load of tripe from?? Well at least you said you weren't certain of the specs.

As far as we know so far, the XGP will actually be considerably weaker than the GP2X. It's supposed to only feature a single main processor at 200mhz, as opposed to the GP2X's 2 processors at 200mhz a piece.

The GP2X hasn't been fully actualised yet and it's already more powerful than the product that hasn't come out yet. The only thing that will be able to make the XGP compete with anything is strong homebrew/coding support, and most of that concentration is already working with the GP2X.

Thanks for easing my panic. I was reading the other thread here and there's a lot of talk about it where I work as well - I was getting worried.

It all depends on whether people will be able to use the 3d chip as a general use processor. It has 4 FPUs which is the gp2x's major fallback. And smooth PSX emulation would be more likely on the XGP because of the hardware rendering as opposed to software on the gp2x.

If it doesn't use linux, or can't be made to use linux easily, then it might take a long while for emulators to be ported to the XGP as there is a lot more work if the OS is some custom one.

It looks interesting from the POV of hardware 3D. But nothing else is worth getting too excited about at this stage.

If it does come to be, I hope it runs Linux and OpenGL ES easily.

...if someone cares to port an emulator and adapt it to the XGP´s custom hardware, that is.

Well the XGP has a widescreen and analog stick. If you are going to use it mainly for emulation it is not as suitable as the GP2X. The odd res(with respect to emulated systems) and 16:9 aspect would make emulators look stretched and distorted. If the image is left at 1:1 the screen area will be much smaller than on the GP2X with a large border. The analog control will be rather imprecise for emus. It is designed for the same 3D type of games that are on the PSP or DS not 2D and emulation.

The 3d accelerator can not be used for generic processing tasks. It might help emulating the PSX but much less for other "2D" systems. The FPU vector unit at the other hand will have more uses. It's also important to keep in a mind that only after profiling the actual hardware we might be able to make any valid conclusion.

If indeed XGP is using the VRedner3D from MagicEyes then... well let me say it will share some of things with GP2x what people were complaining for.

While it is true that we don't know it's power, it is more than raw power and CPU speed that makes a system suitable for emulation. If raw power is all you need get a Pocket PC. Other things like screen aspect and resolution and control type have a big impact on it. Even if we say that the XGP is powerful enough to emulate anything we want up to PSX, if it doesn't control well or display without distortion for stuff like SNES etc. it is not as well suited in my opinion.

3D graphics is all vectors so final resolution doesn't matter that much as for 2D games.

My point was about VRender3D being made on the same silicon process as the MMSP2. Given that 3D processing is much more math intensive, bandwith intensive and both these chipsets are made on the same silicon process I will risk to say that battery life might be shorter on the XGP...
(and lith-ions batteries thought better than NiMH aren't magical either)

Dont worry about it. The GP2x will hold you off until we get more info about the XGP and the XGP mini (mini gp32).

Although, I have a feeling that the xgp series will be embraced by the community once all the stones are in place. The designs arent even final yet, so it is really early to be worrying about the XGP.

I'm buying the XGP and the Mini when they come out. The gp2x is fine for right now though.

*Patiently waits for August (Xgp) and October (XGP Mini) :)

BTW this is probably the only pro XGP post you will find on this site. Try another Forum for second opinions... Despite what some say, this system has a lot of potential. We still know too little to make a full decision.

Hopefully GPH will release a GP2X mini :)

The thing is, since the design isn't final yet I can't understand people who keep saying that it will be more powerful than the gp2x, better for x, fantastic for y...

Nobody knows yet. By the time it's finished it might just be a popstation clone with dodgy compatability.

Personally, I think I won't buy an XGP because the GP3X is going to be much better, with 10 1ghz processors that are easy to program for, compatability with gp2x, xgp and xbox360 out of the box and a 15" display. Plus it will run for 50 hours off a single 20p fuel cell.

I for one wouldn't like you carry around a 15" handheld unless you can fold it up into a 1" cube and control it with eye-movements. Then I'd buy it, but I'd look silly holding a 15" screen... maybe options for 6"?

*waits for GP3X*

@ jmetal88, vis 88: I could add one if you want :)
Actually no I can't but it's the thought that doesn't count...

Anyway on topic, the XGP and XGP mini could be brilliant, could be crap, could even be vapourware; but the important thing is that they aren't any of these things yet, at the moment they're probably a few prototypes at least one of which belonging to satanclaus.

EDIT: This is what happen when you change tense half way through a long sentence, I won't change it partly for educational purposes (err... yeah  ), partly because it's humorous, but mainly because I'm lazy.
Oh wait I've spent more time writing this than I would have done correcting my mistake, also it seems my edit is now considerably longer than my original post, well...
...yeah :)

im thinkin i may will get a xgp mini if its like that. and if it supports gp32 stuff i am set, as long as i can put some video on it i am good and as long as it is atleast 350mhz and can emulate snesnes/gba/genesis i am gtg.

Shayeah right!  Most Pocket PC Phones are barely approaching 350 mhz.....I doubt they'd go that high when even the "mighty" PSP is at 222 mhz....and they HAVE the money TO do it.

The PSP is 333 MHz ;)

jlobel just get a GP2X and be done with it. The screen is much bigger and is more comfortable to hold anyway. If you still want a mini get one later, it won't be out for a while yet. You are allowed to have 2 handhelds right?
