You need to put AUTOEXEC.CFG and CONFIG.CFG in the ID1 folder, within the Quake folder.

You can create these files yourself: just open up a text editor and save a blank document as the file names. Make sure you turn any word wrap feature off and that you save as "all files", so that the files aren't automatically saved as text files.

Quake should now launch okay and you need to press the joystick in, like a button, to select menu options.

I had this problem myself and the friendly folk here helped me out, so this is good advice I'm passing on. For future reference though, have a look to see if your problem has already been posted, rather than start a new thread.

Good luck and let us know if you get Quake working.

Those aren't errors, they're just statements. autoexec.cfg and config.cfg aren't needed (config.cfg is written when you exit, but Quake just uses default options if it doesn't exist). autoexec.cfg is only needed if you want to automatically run commands on startup. When Quake has finished loading you just need to press start to get to the menu.
