I've got a tape image of Starship Escape that I want to play in VICE - anybody know how it's done? If I attach the image using the 'Autostart image...' option, it pauses for a few seconds and then says it's FOUND STARSHIP ESCAPE, LOADING.

Do I have to wait for a real time tape load or something? I've left it for a while but nothing seems to happen. I know it needs a 16k ram pack, but I can't work out how to select that either.

I've tried the VICE docs, but they're are a bit vague when it comes to actually loading a tape image.

Any thoughts anyone?

Thanks in advance...

Here's some advice for you, read before you post! This is the GP32 board!

PS: Real men use Frodo.

They certainly do. Especially unexpanded ones.

I'll have a look at the tape image and let you know later.

Regarding Expansion settings - you need to create a new script to run different memory configurations I think. I'll get it working and send you what you need.

All 8k, 16K games wil lrun on the default Vice setting of 24k expansion

3k expanded games will need a new config.

Unexpanded games need a new config.

More later.

I have a working image of the game loading. It loads and runs but needs keyboard. it allows joystick on the game menu but I can't get it working yet. I'll dig out my original Vic and tape and try that tonight. It is currently not very playable using virtual keyboard :-(

Just use the latest version of Xvic (vice) and autostart the image with all expansions enabled (default)

If you want to alter the memory expansion use Select button on GP2x and set expansion to none or all. Note 3k Expansion currently not supported.

More later. Hopefully good news as this was a very hard game I never finished.

Alex: It's no wonder people get put off by 'the community' - I've been on this forum for 2 years and still you felt the need to post to point out my 'mistake', even though you obviously didn't read my post in your 'enthusiasm' to point out my error, otherwise you'd have spotted that I'd asked for VIC20 help, not C64 - I even put it in the title!

Jeff: Who needs for than 3.5K? :D

Ian: Many thanks! It's a hard game, but I'm sure I completed it 20 years ago... very satisfying watching your ship leave. In fact I'm sure I remember the first time I managed to get all the ship parts back, I couldn't remember what the ship originally looked like, so I couldn't work out how to put it back together!

How do you change the expansion from the menu - I can't find a relevant option? Was it added in the latest version?

Latest version - Memory Expansions - all / None therefore 24k or 3.5k only - no 6.5k mode available for now unless you create a new script.

PM me if you need these scripts

Latest version also supports TV out and scaling of screen.

To almost quote Jeff Minter - "if you can't write a good playable action game in under 1k of memory you are not a good programmer"
