Sorry to burst your bubble, but my gp2x overheats and crashes when I overclock to 266 and try to run cpu-intensive apps like gngeo. But I'm going to fix this soon with a heatsink.

Odds are over a hundred to 1 that your MMSP2 is not overheating at all-- even 2 200 MHz ARM9s use exceedingy little power, same for most of the rest of the hardware in there. And it just cannot tolerate that clockrate. Or your power consumption is too high for your existing batteries and you need some higher-current cells like the Energizer 2500mah NiMHs I'm able to run at 300 MHz+ with without incident.

Also, you are an exceedingly oppressed minority if you cannot reach even 266 MHz with stability. I'm yet to meet someone yet who cannot reach 250 MHz at LEAST.

Also, due to the fact that the ARM9 cores' ratings are based on what clockrate they are stable at, and not actual architectural differences in the majority of cases, the 266 MHz ARM9 used in the XGP line probably does not achieve such hefty overclocks such as 200->266, e.g. 266->333-- they probably crap out around the high 280s, 90s or low 300's at best.

If the GP2X is anything like the GP32 as far as overclocking, voltage to the CPU can be modded to get higher clock rates. If you increase the voltage to the CPU *slightly* (too much, then POOF) you can get higher speeds.

There maybe will even be a "pencil trick" :p
 
For some strange reason I can only find mention of 200mhz processors on the Magic Eye site :(
Also, from what I can tell the table on http://forum.mesdigital.com/product/ seems to suggest that the processor in the GP2X is a lot better at rendering movies than the XGP's, however it looks as though the XGP will have a dedicated sound processing hardware (Sound Synthesizer: 64Poly Wavetable). Now if only I could find info on the 266mhz version...
 
do any conventional x86 based console emulators support multithreading?

I've never come across one. Either way it wouldn't do any good on the XGP or GP2X if an X86 emulator did.
