So What Is The Secret To Upgrading To 2.0?

I am not doing the double secret handshake right, or something. What was wrong with launching the app through Utility anyways?

So I power the unit on, hold down Start and Select, and nothing. It doesn't matter when exactly I turn the unit on, or hold down Start and Select. I am using the same SD card I used when upgrading to 1.4.

Anyways, what exactly am I doing incorrectly here? Thanks!

Ken

silly me. I was using a 128 MB stick. The Firmware Updading screen went by, rather fast. Now it is sitting at the Loading... screen, says Firmware ver 2.0.0 but it has been here for a while. I am afraid to turn the thing off because I assume I would then brick it.

Why is this taking so long?

well hells bells, i didn't know I had to hold Start & Select down the entire time! My GP2X is up and running on 2.0. Sorry, but there needs to be clearer instructions written on the gp2x.com page.

You don't need to hold them down the whole time. Once uboot has detected you're holding them down it starts to check for firmware updates. You can release the buttons at that time.

The update process works like this -

Your existing uboot will automatically look for gp2xboot.img and gp2xkernel.img and flash them (it doesn't check for start+select before flashing). It doesn't know to check for the new filesystem image.

The kernel will start to run but fail when it can't find the filesystem it's expecting. The gp2x will show the green screen and do nothing else.

Reboot and the new uboot will start up. The new uboot doesn't automatically flash and so needs start+select holding down. If you don't hold them down then nothing else will be updated and the gp2x will fail to boot again. If you do hold them down it will look for firmware update files on the sd again (probably best to remove gp2xboot.img and gp2xkernel.img before doing this - there's no need to risk things by flashing them twice). You only need to hold down start+select until the update starts.

The new uboot knows about the new filesystem image and the other files that need to be updated, and it will continue the update process.

Interesting. Thank you for the info. All I know is once I rebooted and it was progressing to the next screen, and I was holding the two buttons down, it was working.

But this is quite helpful as I want to write about the new features in 2.0.0. Hopefully some people here can give me some more info on that (when I am awake, and coherent). For now, I go to sleep.

Cheers,

Ken

It's because the first time round you updated U-Boot. You then have to restart because the current U-Boot cannot run jffs2 images.
