V2.0.0 Tips And Notes And Usefull Stuff

howto use the system menu corectly:

B - Save and exit
X - Exit to settings w/o save
START - Exit to main menu w/o save
Y - increase value (ip)
A - lower value (ip)

Autorun - Rename an app to autorun.gpu and put it on your sd or in the nand. Don't know which has priority, or if a .gpe extension can be used as well. A check is made before autorunning to see if an app called irqbattery returns something, and if it does it won't autorun. I don't know what it means if irqbattery returns something, but it probably means the battery level is too low I'd guess (can't test this - only have mains power on my gp2x).

2.0.0 Hack - Replacing the 2.0.0 LCD adjustment display with set_lcd from file archives

New set_lcd screen:
http://www.gp2x.de/cgi-bin/cfiles.cgi?0,0,0,0,52,1358

Assuming you have previously installed GP2x STERM and set up Windows
with the USBGadget COM driver.

Start STERM on GP2x,start and connect via Windows HyperTerminal

Enter the Following:

cd /usr/gp2x/imglcd
cp set_lcd.png set_lcd.png_old
cp /mnt/sd/set_lcd.png .

Exit STERM

Run Setting/lcd app on gp2x !

Enjoy

@Pipa,

I have succsessfully edited the boot sound and made it work. I will post a thread on it later.

(for those that didn't know, I am new here)

K-teto updated his bootup sound during beta testing :p

The bootup sound needs to be exactly 2.7 seconds long and have exactly the same properties as the original. This means stereo, 16-bit and 22KHz.

You can then flash it as you would a firmware, with gp2xsound.wav on your SD. There is no need for any other fw upgrade files.

I changed the sound on mine, still have to get a perfect one though.

It has to be 16 bit, 22Khz, stereo, (bitrate doesn't really exist in wave)

Yeah, it must be stereo or else it will come out sounding like a chipmunk ;)

I have a shortened version of the Windows 98 (or is it 95?) log in theme up for download here. If you've already upgraded to 2.0 just pop the wav file on a freshly formatted card, and boot it up while pressing start+select. The firmware Updating screen will come up for a bit, then go to the menu. Reboot and listen.

V2.0.0 Creating an FTP/telnet user

Based on Notes from a post by crusty here http://www.gp32x.de/board/index.php?showtopic=27848&st=15

The Linux/Unix user world is divided into root and all the rest.
Privileges are defined by membership in specific groups as
defined in the /etc/group, /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow files.
This is standard system administration for which there is plenty
of documentation on-line or in texts.

Following instructions assume you have configured the gp2x to use USB Networking.
Do not type the surrounding single quote marks when entering text.

1. Use the Start Menu - Run option and type 'telnet'.

2. At the command line prompt type 'open 10.1.0.235'.

3. At the resulting gp2x login prompt type 'root'.

4. There is no password required for this user so you will see the bash
shell prompt: [root@gp2x root]$

5. Type 'adduser -s /bin/bash <yournewusername>' (Suggest using gp2xuser, so we all have a default id)

6. You will be prompted to change the password. Enter it twice as prompted.

7. The new user has been created and you can login to it.

8. Type 'logout'.

9. The connection will be closed.

10. Rerun telnet, type 'open 10.1.0.235' and login as 'yournewusername'.

11. Continue with ordinary GNU/Linux shell commands.

Now try your ftp client from the Windows machine, using the new user
and its password.

Thank you so much . Since you got encoding them down to a science could i request the old macintosh startup noise . THIS ONE .

Anyone tried changing the startup .wav file before upgrading?

Mine now has the Macintosh chime. Ha ha, I should have read the entire thread. It would have saved me from finding it! Oh well. I'll upload later, have a meeting to go to.

I can't get this to work :( (Big surprise, eh?)

I'm using MP3 Trix to edit my .wav ... I made it exactly 2.7 seconds long, 22khz, stereo. It manages to leave a nice 2.7 seconds of silence after I upgrade. :(

It actually has to be a little bit more than 2.7, about 2.710 is perfect.

I am editing the Mac startup sound now. I am using Audacity on Linux.

EDIT: Hmm... My GP2x stopped wanting to upgrade the sound file, it is edited and everything.

a little off-topic but: bitrate is the amount of bits an audio or video file takes up per second. so the wav you described would be 16 x 22000 x 2 = 704kbps. CD quality audio is double that because it's sampled at twice the frequency. Bitrate is more useful when talking about compressed audio & video, however, because it gives you a rough estimate of how much compression has been applied.
