Psx4gp2x Beta Testers Thread

Hmm... but can they really do anything against it? Since the emulator doesn't make any profits and there is no actual encouragement of "piracy" it's no different than snes emulation, or am I mistaken?

You are supposed to already own the PS1 games in order to use PSX4GP2X. Sony's PSP solution will have you buying them again. (+ some free at download stations, I heard.)
Sure they'll be pissed off, but it's only because their business model of asking you to pay for a product again sucks ass.

I'm just remembering the problems Bleem! had:
http://www.out-law.com/page-2164

The difference between PS1 and SNES is that it Sony will be looking to sell their old titles. God knows what will happen to Nintendo emulation once the Wii comes out with its backwards compatibilty. I guess NES, SNES and N64 emulation is too established now to prevent. However, budding new PS1 emulators on rival handhelds is another matter..

Edit - - I'm sounding a little doom and gloom here. Let's stick to enjoying those glorious beta videos for now! :)

wont sony also have a problem with the bios file being used?

I can't imagine that Sony would really be too bothered about the affect PSX emulation has on them. The proportion of their market that is affected by people running emulators is fairly small compared to the vast number of people just simply consuming Sony's products with no interest in computing further than sitting on the sofa playing the latest shoot 'em/beat 'em/platform/footie release etc at 60€ a shot. While money may be no object to Sony in launching any legal action, the possible negative publicity is probably enough to keep them at bay. The media love a David and Goliath story afterall.

The vids are starting to look good though. :)

It seems like the front page got digged (www.digg.com). Any publicity is good I guess. Most of the comments didn't understand that this is still in beta though.

There was a comment about how he heard that it was cheaply made and the buttons fell out? I don't think I've ever heard of a case like that.

This probably has a stupid answer, if it is indeed a stupid question but...

Why is there a beta? If this isn't a commercial product (ie pay for it) then I don't fully understand why it is released for testing to a select few only. IMO, betas are for a company to test a product to make sure that its worth the money when they release it to the general public. If it's free, wouldn't the dev(s) benefit from more testers?

Sorry, I'm probably clueless.

It isn't finished - thus, he doesn't want to release it to the masses just yet. It has problems, and beta testing is used by developers to debug their applications.

I' ve just want to know when the next beta of psx4gp2x will be out and if it will be public?

I'd like too say to Zodd to go on his good work and the french community of the gp2x is very exiting of his work.

Thanks for all.

It will be public, and that's all I know, other than it will be out soon.

Alright, I've been bored today, so I've made some quick vids. Here's the first ones:

Ace Combat

OC: 280
VSYNC: 26
FRAMERATE: 13

Forgive the low res, but you can get a good impression of how fast it runs. :p

Soul Blade

OC:280
VSYNC: 10
FRAMERATE: 2

It's a slow one, but still looks pretty

Bust-A-Move 3

OC: 280
VSYNC: 30
FRAMERATE:15

Pretty playable this one. :)

Street Fighter EX Plus Alpha

OC: 280
VSYNC: 10
FRAMERATE: 4

Slow, but looks nice.

V-Rally

OC: 280
VSYNC: 12
FRAMERATE: 4

Watch me drive on nothingness while the gp2x loads :p

Crash Bash

OC: 280
VSYNC: 12
FRAMERATE: 4

More to follow...

ok, here are the last two for today:

Tekken

OC: 280
VSYNC: 21
FRAMERATE: 10

Runs about half speed I'd say.

And lastly:

Tekken 2

OC: 280
VSYNC: 10
FRAMERATE: 5

This one obviously has that bug I've talked about earlier on in the thread so it's more one for ZodTTD and unai in case my description wasn't up to much.

Anyway, that's it for now, I thought I'd cover some games that hadn't been covered yet, hence the slightly weird choice of titles. I really want to try worms armageddon or world party, so i'll go out and try and get a copy tomorrow... :)

So, frameskip is still disabled in this latest beta (If it is, then that means FFVII was running at ~20fps w/ FS0 and could be full speed at FS2-3, which seems too good to be true to me)?

Has there already been an FFT video (I searched this thread and couldn't find any)?

No, Threre´s an autoframeskip in the beta that works quite decent.
It just seems to me that you do not really know how frameskip works, you seem to think fs 1 is as double as fast as fs0, but that´s wrong, since most of the stuff has to be emulated anyway, whether there´s frameskip or not. It mainly makes the GPU core faster, not the CPU.

FF: Tactics doesn´t run that great on the beta, maybe one or two fps faster, overall speed still ca. 1/3 fullspeed, plus texture errors (like Zodttd described on the first page of the thread) maybe that´s why noone made a video yet.

I got a FF tactics video. I posted about it earlier, but i never came up on the archive.

I'll try again using another method.

Here it is.....

Final Fantasy Tactics
