How are Atari Jaguar and 3DO emulation(s) coming along, that if they are in th works? To DaveC and the others: this time, I did quick research on Wikipedia, and I think it's possible, save the 64-bit part. The 3D0 appears to be somewhat possible, unless the ARM60 CPU it has is some sort of successor to the ARM7/ARM9
processor that the GBA and GP2X use, respectively. Some cool titles, such as Need for Speed, and Wolfenstein 3D were released on these consoles (Wolf3D in case people can't get the interpreter running for some reason). Sorry if I don't have my facts straight again!

gp32_console

COOL!

So what games are worth playing on jag and 3d0 ?

As a Jag owner only Tempest 2000 is worth it.
3D0 then only one that seemed good at the time was Street Figther on it ..

I would say its not worth the effort, better to concentrate on GBA and Snes...

There is already a Jaguar emu it's just plain slow... and 3DO has a couple good original games, I really like trip'd to be truthful.

You got a point there, I pretty much only wanted it for Need for Speed and Wolf3D (since the Jaguar and 3DO Versions were cooler). And yes, you're right also in the fact that, as of now, GBA and SNES emulation(s) are higher priority. Still, it could serve as a side project, and it could also serve in making the GP2X a multi-console emulator capable of emulating stuuf from DOS (maybe) to GBA (also maybe). Just thought it would be cool.

So you are one of these types are you?

IE posting like a spastic machine gun without even bothering to read the many discussions of the same thing on the forum that keep getting discussed over and over.

Yes, you can write the emulator, you can make it full-speed, I won't do it.

I think that the main problem is that no-one cares enough to bring the Jag emu up to the level of the PSX or Genesis emus. I would hold out more hope for the PSX emu personally if I wanted to play the games you mentioned.

Check wikipedia.org to see what hardware came in the system you want to see emulated, then see if the PC emulators are anywhere near supporting games properly and at full-speed.

If the answer is a lot of strange Chips for the hardware and the PC won't do it properly at 1GHz than I expect you will have your answer.

The PC versions are a good gauge because most emulators start there and they tell you the level of knowledge on how to emulate a system and also how much people really are interested in making emulators for the Jaguar for instance.

I would expect only the PSX emu to get finished properly, only because of all the hard work and dedication of those coding for it. Unless of course you personally happen to have the education, skill and determination (and two or three brilliant associates) to throw into a Jaguar emulator I don't see it ever happening.

Both consoles have a number of worthwhile games:

Jaguar: Tempest 2000, Alien vs. Predator, Defender 2000, Raiden, Wolfenstein 3D, Attack of the Mutant Penguins, Iron Soldier, Power Drive Rally, Super Burnout, Cybermorph, Battlemorph, Missile Command 3D.

3DO: Star Control 2, Icebreaker, Return Fire, Shockwave 1 & 2, Shockwave: Operation Jumpgate, Total Eclipse, D, AD&D Slayer, Alone in the Dark, Foes of Ali, Gex, The Horde, Lucienne's Quest, Need for Speed, Off-World Interceptor, PaTaank, Road Rash, Robinson's Requiem, Star Fighter, Phoenix 3.

This may not seem like enough to make the systems worth buying, but if you're just downloading ISO's off the internet, they're certainly worth trying out. I'm somewhat doubtful Jaguar and 3DO emulators will ever be full speed on the GP2X, but they'd certainly get a spot on my SD card if they were at least playable (Hell the slow-as-molasses Jaguar emulator is already on there)

so there is already a jaguar emu? I think coders are focusing on perfecting the more popular systems right now. Once that dies down more obscure systems will pop up.

HELLO!! You claim to have checked wikipedia, I check it (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atari_Jaguar) and find this page:

I suppose you don't realize the complexity that arises from many processors, hell DrMD has a sub-20mhz 68000 for a core and a 4mhz z80 and well known interactions and it still isn't fully compatible.

Maybe you should try the general topic of "emulation" and see what good nuggets of advice are in some articles written on that topic.

CPUs:

* "Tom" (contains 3 video-related processors), 25.59 MHz
o Graphics processing unit (GPU) – 32-bit RISC architecture, 4K internal cache, provides wide array of graphic effects
o 64-bit object processor – programmable; can behave as a variety of graphic architectures
o 64-bit blitter processor – high speed logic operations, z-buffering and Gouraud shading
o 64-bit DRAM controller (not a processor)
* "Jerry" , 26.6 MHz
o Digital Signal Processor – 32-bit RISC architecture, 8k internal cache
o CD-quality sound (16-bit stereo)
+ Number of sound channels limited by software
+ Two DACs (stereo) convert digital data to analog sound signals
+ Full stereo capabilities
o Wavetable synthesis, FM synthesis, FM Sample synthesis, and AM synthesis
o A clock control block, incorporating timers, and a UART
o Joystick control

* Motorola 68000 (processor #5)
o General purpose control processor, 13.295 MHz

PS, the z-buffer and shading features of the 64-bit GPU core will be hard to emulate. DUH!!!!

Since this thread seems to be going nowhere good can I ask something?

Is there a good list of emus and their progress for the 2x somewhere around here?

Yes, there is. If you check out the Emulation Speculationlink on the main page of the GP2X wiki, you'll see it. Here's the link..

Ok and since i don't want to make another useless thread could someone inform me how the GP2x mame performs? What types of roms will it run? I don't want to go get roms that are too powerful for it.

ehem... I mean, I don't want to backup my arcades if they aren't going to work.. you know how hard it is to backup arcades these days..

Stop with the thread hijacking! :angry:

(search for the gp2x 0.34 romset .torrent)

P.S. :angry:

sorry for the thread jacking but this thread is a repost of another thread anyways.. Therefore I didn't want to be the guy who made another thread that already had mame info in it.

You might be able to run some games without those features. I can't imagine Double Dragon V or Ultra Vortek would need z-buffering or shading at all. But if you can't even play Cybermorph on it, then what's the point?

Then you should sell it. You have no business owning a Jag if all you want to play is one game.

I myself have even grown to love Checkered Flag, you should give some of the other games a chance. :)

The best game for the 3DO is Star Control II, but since we already have a port of Ur-Quan Masters (albeit in alpha stage), 3DO emulation for me would just be a proof of concept.

But a nice one indeed.
