Hi All,
This is my first post.

I am and have always been a complete gaming nut, and I am looking to get a GP32.

On the surface the GP32 looks to be the dogs nut sack, being able to run classics like Doom, SCUMMV, DivX etc etc. But once I started looking into the nitty gritty, it is apparant that these claims are only part true.
For example games like Doom only run 90% complete (No save/load, some sound issues), not all Lucas SCUMMV games work, SNES Emu still buggy.

Plese do no think I'm on some kind of high horse, I am a great supporter of underground developers, but I would like peoples opinions on the GP32 drawbacks at the moment.

Thanks
Mr Fixit

draw backs? ok no free divx player, most emus have some fault, no genesis emu, no gba emu, can't complete sam and max on scumm and games that are offical but can't be played because they in korean

oh and also that you can't buy any of the accessories like the case in britain

the gp32 coding scene is undergoing a rennaisance at thew moment, what with tom releasing his doom sources & a new version of scummvm to be released soon.

at current estimates, a save & load version of doom should be out within a week. there is no firm estimate for the next gp32 scummvm though.

as for the snes emulation, this has slowed down & pretty much stopped. perhaps someone should start again? ;)

yeh direct is right, the scene has come alive in a major way recently with projects happening left right and centre and it seems a lot of good coders and programmers have suddenly jumped aboard

SNES emulation hasn't halted; its just not heard about much. Albeit, no-one's heard from zarj for aaaages, so he might have vanished, but Intellecto's one was updated no more than a few weeks back - and you're saying its stopped? Nah - just pottering along outside of everyone's vision, so there aren't as many lame people saying "When will _____ run at full speed with sound". Who inevitably arrive if something is in the spotlight.

I must admit am drooooooollllin at the thought of proper mobile Snes emulation.

On a different note, whats the deal with having to purchase the DiVX player. Dont get me wrong I wouldn't mind buying it, but as everything else is virtually open source its interesting that this costs.

this all relies on the commitment of the community.

Doom: will hopefully get better with the release of new sound libs by Gamepark and more time for the coder.

ScummVM: these problems are not limited to the GP32 port.

patience my friend!

I think the SlashDot article is partially to blame for this. Hell, the SlashDot article even mentioned GBA emulation!

99% of what people (outside Korea) are doing on the GP32 is homebrew stuff. None of the emulators, SCUMMMV, Doom, or anything else like that is licensed software. That means you can do one of two things:

A. If you are a programmer, learn to program for the GP32 and make it better.

B. If you are not a programmer, support programmers any way you can! Maybe it's beta testing, or web space hosting, or simply offering a few bucks. The programmers (who as far as I know, are all working for free on their own time) are the ones putting forth effort to make the GP32 a better toy for YOU. The more support and feedback they get, the more likely they are to continue making and improving their wares for you to have for free.

Yes, I agree that the GP32 as of late has been market as the "end all" of handheld units. It will get there, but it will take support from us, its community, to do so.

Flack,
What slashdot article? Whilst I agree that the community must support any product for it to succeed, at the end of the day one must draw a line on how raw a product is before you decide to purchase it (Or not)

I do not think anyone can be blamed for asking questions when some pretty impressive claims are made.

Dude, MoviePark costs ~$5.80USD. Thats the cost of a cheap lunch.

And, it works pretty damn good.

Is there any emulator an any system which is 100 %?
I don't know any, and I'm an emulator user since 1992 (A64 Amiga :)

Flack at what slashdot article?
"... I came across the Korean GP32, a handheld console that looks superior to the GBA in every way. It's capable of emulating the GBA, Super Nintendo, Commodore 64, etc. Plus there's a SCUMMVM engine for Monkey Island games and a Java VM. Seems to have a huge online following. It runs its own OS, and there are programs capable of playing divx/mp3 files, though there's also a Linux port on the way."

Im yet to get my grubby little mitts on a GP32 yet, but i have been killing time between now and when i can afford one (roll on payday ;)) by looking around the internet and i have to say im extremely excited by the level of user interaction with it. I admit i dont have much technological knowledge, but im looking forward to getting to grips with it. Im also excited by the amount of work thats being done. Theres loads of stuff out there and while some of it may be a little rough, thats what you have to expect from home-grown stuff.

I cant wait ;)
