How Many Versions Of Gp32 Are There?

mmmmm....theres 2, non front lit unit and front lit unit, altough the flu is not offical by gamepark, so only 1 offically, there are also turbo charged ones (both FLU and Non-FLU) available from gbax. so thats 4, but only 1 offical.

If they're not official, who makes the FLU GP32's?

Also, this turbo charged 166 thingy from Gbax has me confused. As far as I understand, all GP32s have the potential to overclock to speeds up to 166...so what makes this turbo charged version so special? Does it go even higher?

The non turbo charged has the potential to oc to 166 but not garunteed.
The turbo charged is garunteed to oc to 166

game boy color is back lit or front lit

sega nomad is back lit or front lit

which do u think is better, back or front lit

Which, the Nomad or the GG? I still have my gg, but never really appreciated it much. Dynamite headdy (speeled wrong) kicked ass though.

Both the GG and the Nomad were backlit. I loved my Nomad, of couse I think it sent off radiation. Now I have a 2nd thumb on my right hand, so I can press buttons really fast on controllers :D

I had the Game Gear. It sucked batteries quicker than a $2 crack whore, and the screen was nearly unviewable in sunlight.

IMO, FLU > BLU

yeah that sucked bout the gg and nomad. but you could get those ac adaptor kits that really saved you alot of damn $ cus you didnt have to buy new batteries every 30 minutes :)

and back on topic. when i first got my gp32 a told a freind at school and he wanted me to send him pics of it but i was d/ling crap for it so i didnt want to waste my precious kbps on stupid pics so i told him to search for it himself. he said that he saw pics of gp32s that were diff. colors other than white. has anyone seen this? i saw a FAQ once that told you how to "dye" the plastic or some shit. i think he was just being a dumbass, but any answers?

There are 2 diffrent versions of the gp32 currently, the non-lit version and the FLU (front lit unit). The FLU is just a moded version of the original gp32 with a light. The mod is done by a diffrent company but is acctually suported by game park, so I guess you could say it's an offical mod. Game park does however have plans to release a BLU (back lit unit) for the euro release of the gp32 in about a month. The normal unit is the cheapest FLU is a bit more and the BLU is a bit more than the FLU. As for comparing the units they are all the same from the start but just have diffrent lighting options. The BLU will probably be the best as far as visability but is the most expensive and will probably have a shorter battery life. The FLU should be a decent lighting source and have a little longer battery life than the BLU and the non-lit is well.. non-lit will be cheapest have the longest battery life and will be hard to see.

These GP32 have a voltage mod to make them overclock easier.

Actually, there are quite a few versions of GPs. Some of which aren't available yet, or got pulled before they became available...

Early Prototypes You Can't Buy/cancelled/etc.:
- GP32 Internet: A very very early prototype that never got released, although I think someone on the board managed to buy it. It used compactflash rather than smartmedia and there are pics out of it looking at the yahoo homepage. It also had, if I remember correctly, a lot less RAM - like 512kb or something. I think.
- GPi: 200MHz GP32 with a built in phone to use the Korean phone system. Why oh why couldn't they have just made the lot 200MHz, I don't know, but that's what that one was.

Ones you CAN buy, official:
- GP32: Your average GP32 without frontlighting. Guraanteed to go to 133MHz, may or may not go up to 166MHz, depends on the unit.
- GP32 FLU: As with the GP32 but with a frontlight on as well.

Modded ones:
- GP32 or GP32FLU "166MHz": A while ago a member of the board realised that the same trick used on PC CPUs of raising the voltage to get a higher overclock could be used on the gamepark and tried fiddling with resistors in a couple of places to achieve just that. The result was that their 156MHz one (or rather, crashed over that) went up to 166 with ease. They then tried taking it suicidally high - 186MHz - and actually managed it, if I remember correctly. Anyway, GBAX now offer to mod GP32s prior to selling them so you can be certain you'll get that extra bit of speed. They are NOT fixed at 166MHz - they are just certain of being able to achieve it.
- 32MB ram GP32s: Ones with the ram mod done. So far, you can't buy them; you have to do the mod yourself. Which unfortunately, I don't feel up to.

Unreleased ones to come out
- GP32 BLU: Targetted for the European launch the BLU is backlit instead of frontlit. Basically, what this means, is the colours will come out clearer, but you may well need to have the light on all the time to see at all. Which reduces battery life. Once the European launch happens, to my knowledge, this will be the only type of GP32 produced (I don't think they're doing an unlit version...)

I hope that lot's helped, and for that matter is accurate. Its possible I missed off a couple of early prototypes or models intended later, but I think its all of them. Obviously, however, the main two you need to be interested in are the normal one and the FLU at the moment - and the BLU once its released in Europe, of course...
