Tested with my pandora and it works fine.
It has the new PL3 payload which is now the default payload for psfreedom.

XBMC uses ffmpeg for the most part (mplayer is based on ffmpeg aswel), they have dvdplayer (their custom brew codec factory) the old xbox was running mplayer windows build with an w32 api emulator for stuff that mplayer needed.

Rockbox has an fixed point atrac3 codec (modified version from ffpmeg's libavcodec) and also has some nice arm optimizations (including assembly).

I'd say, we need a rockbox bootloader that defaults to pandoraos (chainload nand bootsectors) unless otherwise specified.
For suspend to disk you can do 2 things, create a swap partition or a file in a filesystem. A swap partition would be the easiest way i think.
Yes, it is possible altough pandora's os should support suspend to disk (aka tuxonice) which it will i expect.
Then i would advice to use sdhc slot2 and configure a swap partition for tuxonice.
