What are you playing this weekend/these days?

Completed Links Awakening on switch 2. I had positive memories of playing in on Gameboy when originally released and thoroughly enjoyed it again. Its very whimsical, Zelda lite. I enjoyed the linearity and item based progression. Fun to learn that it was originally skunkworks and the designers took queues from Twin Peaks.

I have it on my Switch. While I was obsessed with the original, playing it over and over for years (and I still play it from time to time) the remake hasn’t sucked me in as much as I expected. This is a problem I am personally having across games and books and TV/movies in general lately, but in this case I think it’s because this kinda feels like a different game with the same story.

I will finish it eventually, although at the moment if I were to pick one up to play it would be the original

Played a few games recently :

Figment 1 and 2: Isometric action-adventure games set in someone's mind. The fighting/action is pretty simple and the focus is more on puzzles, which is a good thing because I played it on my phone with touch controls. They are relatively short (in a good way, they have enough time to explore things but don't overstay their welcome) and enjoyable with nice puzzles. The first game feels a bit repetitive at times, the second felt less so. Nothing groundbreaking but definitely enjoyable.

Warhammer 40K: Chaos Gate: The original, not the recent one. A turn-based tactical game that have you lead Space Marines against chaos Space Marines. This means that it's not uncommon to have to shoot a dozen times at an enemy to kill him (with the base weapons that most of your troops have). The beginning of the campaign is interesting, but then some design flaws begin to make the experience pretty uninteresting. First of all, playing defensively makes the game a (sometimes slow) cakewalk. You'll want to end turns with all your troops behind cover and then only some "overwatch" enemies might still be a threat. The enemy AI is pretty basic (ranged units get in range then shoot, melee units run in a straight line to your troops) and some troops and weapons you unlock are vastly better than your base troops/weapons, but you can't equip all your troops with them, leading to games where a few troops do all the work. The campaign missions try to keep things interesting with some scripted events (mostly enemy troops teleporting in a possibly challenging position) but it's not enough to keep the game interesting. At least the music is nice.

There is no game: A fun point&click that has you use "out of the box" solutions to play a game that doesn't want to be played. For example at some point the game will display a progress bar and you'll need to tilt it so that it fills and let you proceed, etc. The puzzles are interesting and the game is truly fun, not just trying to be.

When I decided I wanted to play Links Awakening again (due in no small part to you) I did consider the GB version on AP because it's gorgeous with it's fluorescent mouldy pixels. The remake is gorgeous too though. GBC DX version not so much.

Started again with this game... I left it months ago because it was too damn difficult... in a classis Rogue you have one character to use and upgrade, and WHEN you die, you must start again with that single character ... here you need to build and manage a dungeon, babysit many creatures with level up and inventory, and WHEN you die, you lose everything ...

The difficult part is that every single thing is capped until you do some other thing, so it's not possible to just level up / upgrade until you are ready to advance, you need to plan every single move wisely to obtain the necessary stuff for the next step ...

The even more difficult part is that when you attack one of the main enemy factions, and at some point you have to, different enemy factions are triggered and will attack directly your base with a champion and a group impossibly strong ...
... I tried different times to make a maze full of traps before the main rooms, but the one made of wood are almost ineffective, and the more effective traps needs components difficult to find ...
... also, many stronger enemies just evade the main entrance and crush down the walls to reach the main rooms directly ... so there's always the need to reinforce the walls ... and the components are difficult to be found ...

Anyway, this time I tried lowering at max the difficulty settings... there is a VERY good setting that makes you disable the attacks directed at your dungeon, this changes things A LOT ...
but there's also a setting to lower the difficulty peak while you advance, and actually I can't see so much difference here ... so there's still the need to plan in the right way where and how to attack ...

This game gives also the possibility to play with a single character, almost exactly as Rogue, but I tried different times and I don't think it's something doable ... elves can one-hit-kill you even before you see them... and this is just an example ...

I see a lot of potential in this game, and I see that the devs are still adding and updating things, but somehow there's something still not mature enough ...

The game has official MOD support, and I see that there are already many fan made around ... maybe if I continue to fail like now with the official game I'll have a look at those ...
